Barcelona have reached an agreement to terminate Romeu's contract. |
On August 28th, Oriol Romeu unexpectedly left Camp Nou despite having a contract with Barcelona until June 2026. According to AS , both sides reached a financial agreement to terminate the contract early, but there has been no official announcement from the club or Romeu himself.
During the summer, the Spanish defensive midfielder received offers from Girona and several other clubs, but has yet to find a new club. The opportunity remains open as the Turkish transfer window closes on September 12th, and the Saudi Pro League has more than two weeks to strengthen its squad.
Romeu is a product of La Masia academy, making his first-team debut for Barca in 2011 before moving to Chelsea. He previously played for Valencia, Stuttgart (on loan), and spent his longest time at Southampton, where he made 256 appearances in 7 years.
In 2022, Romeu returned to Spain to play for Girona, then was brought to Barca in 2023 on a three-year contract. After 37 matches in his first season, Romeu continued to play for Girona on loan.
Romeu's departure is seen as part of Barcelona's plan to cut its wage bill. According to sources, the club's management is also considering offloading other key players such as goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen and central defenders Ronald Araújo and Andreas Christensen to alleviate the financial pressure weighing on the Catalan club.
