On the X website, Mr. Yerlikaya said that "Operation Heroes-49" was carried out simultaneously across the country.

Last month, a Turkish citizen was murdered by two IS gunmen at the Santa Maria of Italy Catholic Church in Istanbul. Turkish police have arrested the suspect in the attack.

Turkish police on February 6 shot dead a man and a woman from a left-wing "terrorist" group who attacked a security checkpoint outside a court in Istanbul, injuring six people.

In a statement on social media, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said: "While the terrorists attempted an attack - which was neutralized - six people, including three police officers and three civilians, were injured."
