This information was provided by Associate Professor Dr. Dong Van He, Deputy Director of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital and President of the Vietnam Neurosurgery Association, on the sidelines of a scientific forum updating new advances in the treatment of brain tumors and epilepsy, held on May 18th. The forum attracted many leading experts from Vietnam and abroad, including France...
Associate Professor Dr. Dong Van He shared that, to date, there is still no definitive conclusion regarding the link between cell phone waves and electromagnetic waves to brain tumors, despite years of research.
However, experts still suspect a possible link, especially in children. Therefore, it has been recommended that children under 12 should not use mobile phones too early.
At Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, approximately 4,000-5,000 brain tumor patients are examined each year, and more than 2,000 cases undergo surgery. Because this is a tertiary hospital, the surgery rate is higher than the average.
90% of headache cases are not caused by brain tumors.
At the forum, experts also agreed that neuro-oncology is a particularly complex field because tumors can directly affect a patient's movement, language, memory, emotions, and cognition.
Advances in treatment today lie not only in surgical techniques but also in a shift in approach to patient care. This is reflected in the multidisciplinary treatment model – considered an inevitable trend in modern neurology and oncology. This is because treating tumors in general, and brain tumors in particular, cannot be done by a single specialty.
"Patients will receive comprehensive assessments before, during, and after treatment to optimize their survival time and quality of life. All diagnostic methods, surgical procedures, and technological applications must be patient-centered, aiming ultimately to help patients have a better quality of life, prolong their lives, and receive more comprehensive care," Associate Professor Dong Van He emphasized.

According to Associate Professor Dong Van He, many people currently panic when they discover they have a brain tumor because they believe it is an "incurable" disease. However, this is not entirely true.
There are over 120 different types of brain tumors. Some don't require surgery, and patients can live with them for life using medication. Some require early surgery, while others can be monitored for months. The important thing is to correctly identify the type of tumor and develop an appropriate treatment strategy for each patient.
"About 90% of headaches are not related to brain tumors. Only about 5% are related to diseases requiring intervention. Therefore, not every headache should be diagnosed with a brain scan. That would be both costly and overload medical facilities."
However, if the headache gradually worsens, becomes more severe at night or in the early morning, is accompanied by vomiting, seizures, or other abnormal neurological signs, the patient needs to go to specialized hospitals for early examination," Associate Professor Dong Van He advised.
