VHO - This morning, October 20th, at the Vietnam Ethnic Groups Cultural and Tourism Village (Dong Mo, Son Tay, Hanoi), people living on Ly Son Island (Quang Ngai) reenacted the Khao Le The Linh Hoang Sa ceremony. This is an activity within the "Sea and Islands in the Hearts of Our People" program taking place in October at the Village.

In addition, Quang Ngai province displayed an exhibition introducing the tourism culture, images, and artifacts about the Hoang Sa and Bac Hai militia, the Khao Le The Linh Hoang Sa ceremony; and facilitated exchanges and experiences of the finest traditional cuisine of Ly Son Island…
Locals, tourists, and people of various ethnic groups living and working in the Village were deeply moved to witness the reenactment of the Khao Le The Linh Hoang Sa ceremony and hear the stories surrounding it.

Around the beginning of the 17th century, during the Nguyen dynasty, recognizing the importance of expanding the territory and exploiting the valuable resources in the East Sea region of the country, especially in the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos, the Nguyen lords established the "Hoang Sa team" consisting of 70 skilled seafarers from An Vinh and An Hai villages in the Sa Ky estuary area (now belonging to Son Tinh and Binh Son districts) and An Vinh and An Hai villages on Ly Son island to go out to sea to search for resources.

Every year in the second or third lunar month, this troop of soldiers receives orders to depart and return in the eighth lunar month to present the valuable products they have harvested in the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa sea areas to the imperial court.
Throughout centuries of operation, tens of thousands of naval soldiers in the Hoang Sa archipelago have braved countless storms and rough seas to fulfill their duty of safeguarding territorial sovereignty in the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos.

During those arduous sea voyages, many soldiers went out and never returned. To commemorate the soldiers who sacrificed their lives while on duty and to pray for the safety of new recruits, every year in the third lunar month, the people of Ly Son Island organize the Khao Le The Linh Hoang Sa ceremony, attracting the participation of clans whose members served as soldiers on the island.

Khao le is an annual feast, while The Linh is a ritual offering sacrifices to the deceased naval soldiers of the Hoang Sa Islands. The Khao Le The Linh Hoang Sa ceremony also serves to worship ancestors, offer sacrifices, and commemorate those who served in the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa Islands and have passed away.
The Khao Le The Linh Hoang Sa ceremony is held annually by the people of Ly Son Island at the end of the third lunar month, attracting a large number of tourists and people from other localities.

The Khao Le The Linh Hoang Sa ceremony, held at the Am Linh Temple or the An Vinh village communal house or at various clans on Ly Son Island, has contributed to fostering patriotism, preserving the cultural values of our ancestors, strengthening community bonds, and educating future generations of people on Ly Son Island in particular and the whole country in general about our traditions.
In April 2013, the Khao Le The Linh Hoang Sa ceremony was classified by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, under the category of Social Customs and Beliefs.
The Hoang Sa Soldiers' Commemoration Ceremony contributes to affirming Vietnam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos; at the same time, it preserves and promotes cultural values, and educates about national pride and profound humanistic values.

Also at the "Sea and Islands in the Hearts of the People" program, locals, tourists, and people of various ethnic groups had the opportunity to watch artisans and performers from Quang Ngai showcase the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, "Central Vietnam's Bai Choi Art." Not only did they get to watch the performance, but locals and tourists also had the chance to directly participate in the Bai Choi activities.
