The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced the answer keys for the multiple-choice subjects of the 2023 high school graduation exam, amidst ongoing controversy surrounding the English exam. However, contrary to the expectations of many students and teachers that the Ministry would accept and grade both controversial answers, 'distinctive' (B) and 'comparative' (C), only 'distinctive' was chosen, with no further explanation provided.
The English exam for the high school graduation exam has sparked controversy.
Following this decision from the Ministry of Education and Training, many candidates, while acknowledging it as an appropriate move, also hoped for a clear explanation to understand where they went wrong, especially since experts are still divided on the answer key and have not yet reached a final consensus.
For example, Nguyen Thi Thuy Nghi, a student at Xuyen Moc High School (Ba Ria-Vung Tau province), said she immediately chose the answer 'comparative' without much thought, "because 'comparison group' is a fixed term used in experiments that my teacher had emphasized when I was preparing for the IELTS exam."
"I thought I'd guessed correctly, until the Ministry of Education and Training announced the answer was 'distinctive'. About half of my classmates also chose the wrong answer," the female student said.

Therefore, Nghi hopes that regarding this controversial question, the Ministry of Education and Training will explain why they chose 'distinctive' instead of 'comparative'. "If the correct answer was 'distinctive' from the beginning, and 'comparative' was only coincidentally correct, then I hope the Ministry of Education and Training will recognize both answers," Nghi stated.
Truong Tran Mai Anh, a student at Tran Khai Nguyen High School (Ho Chi Minh City), said she chose the answer 'control', which is completely 'out of sync' with the recent controversies. "With the latest move by the Ministry of Education and Training, I find it reasonable, but it's highly likely that it won't resolve the concerns of students who chose incorrectly. The Ministry needs to provide a more specific explanation," the female student shared.
Similarly, Dang Phan Hong Anh, a student from Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (Ho Chi Minh City), also chose an answer unrelated to the controversy: 'pioneering'. "However, this is a highly debated issue, so the Ministry of Education and Training's announcement of the answer without further explanation is somewhat unfair to the students who chose incorrectly. I hope they will receive bonus points," Hong Anh stated.
Many social media accounts are debating the controversial question in the English exam.
Sharing the same view, LVH, a fellow student from the same school, hopes that the Ministry of Education and Training can consider assigning points to choices deemed correct, or at least provide a clear explanation of the exam questions so that candidates are satisfied and no longer have so many doubts as they do now.
"If you answer this controversial question incorrectly, you will lose 0.2 points, which means you might miss out on your preferred university after 12 years of hard work. This would be an even bigger regret if your chosen answer is correct according to the experts, but differs from the official answer," the male student observed.
