This is the first time the main round of the Champions League will not be organized in the traditional way of dividing into groups, but will compete in a new format with the number of teams increased to 36, all of whom can meet each other. Previously, this tournament usually had 32 clubs participating in the main round, divided into 8 groups, each group of 4 teams; the 2 teams ranked first and second in the group will continue to the knockout round. From the 2024 - 2025 season, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) changed the format to raise the tournament to a new level.
Champions League season 2024 - 2025 will compete in a new format
Accordingly, UEFA will combine technology (from a computer-generated software) and a small part of manual methods to determine the matches from the group stage. To do this, UEFA will divide 36 teams into 4 seeding pots, based on the coefficient of each team in the 2024 European Club Rankings.
When a team from a seeded group is drawn manually, the computer will immediately determine the opponents it will face based on the criteria set in the software. Each team will play 8 group stage matches (previously only 6), including 4 home and 4 away matches. Ranking is based on points, and goal difference is the first criterion to determine the position of teams if they are tied on points. After 8 matches, the top 8 teams in the group advance to the round of 16. The teams ranked 9 to 16 will be paired with the teams ranked 17 to 24 in a play-off round to determine the remaining 8 teams. Teams ranked 25 and above will be eliminated.
The 2024-2025 Champions League group stage kicks off on September 17. UEFA has increased prize money to a record level this season, as revenue has increased thanks to an increase in the number of teams, matches and television rights.
