Digital transformation - an essential requirement in the new context.

The global energy market has been volatile in recent years, with unpredictable oil prices, shrinking profit margins, and increasingly stringent requirements for safety, environmental protection, and emission reduction. Simultaneously, there is a growing trend towards energy transition, moving towards Net Zero, developing green fuels, a circular economy , and ESG governance.

In this context, traditional management and operational models, heavily reliant on manual experience, are no longer suitable. For Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (BSR), digital transformation is not only aimed at improving internal efficiency but also at solving the problem of sustainable growth, maintaining high capacity, controlling risks, and adapting flexibly to market shocks.

Speaking about digital transformation, Mr. Nguyen Viet Thang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and General Director of BSR, said that over the past five years, technology has made remarkable progress, with artificial intelligence (AI) becoming the focal point of innovation for all businesses. BSR is also actively promoting digital transformation and applying AI to production and business to fulfill the tasks and responsibilities assigned by the Government and the Vietnam National Energy and Industry Corporation ( Petrovietnam ).

In the spirit of Resolution 57-NQ/TW dated December 22, 2024, of the Politburo and the Government's action programs, Petrovietnam and the BSR Party Committee have placed digital transformation in direct relation to science, technology, and innovation, directly linked to production and business goals, rather than being implemented in a fragmented, campaign-like manner. A highlight of BSR's digital transformation strategy is the "operations-centric" mindset. Instead of merely digitizing administration or superficial management, BSR focuses on integrating digital technology into the "core" of production operations – where the efficiency and reliability of the Dung Quat Refinery are determined.

At Dung Quat Refinery, operational data, equipment data, and energy data systems are integrated and connected in real time, creating a foundation for the application of Big Data, AI, and Digital Twin technologies. As a result, production monitoring and management no longer rely entirely on reactive responses after incidents, but are gradually shifting towards a model of proactive forecasting, early warning, and optimization.

The actual operation in 2025 shows that the Dung Quat Refinery's technical indicators reached a high level: equipment availability was higher than in 2024, and the energy intensity index approached advanced standards... These results clearly reflect the role of digital transformation in improving stability, reducing losses, and optimizing costs.

Digital transformation is closely linked to business performance.

BSR in general and Dung Quat Refinery in particular are experiencing their most efficient operational period ever, with innovation and digital transformation playing a key role. In 2025, digital solutions directly contributed to production and business results, with many operational indicators reaching high levels: equipment availability reached 96.2%, energy intensity was approximately 101%, and the proportion of high-value products reached 82%. Many units operated above their designed capacity, such as CDU at 118%, RFCC at 110%, and NHT at 137%.

In 2025, BSR recorded 1,075 registered ideas and 273 recognized improvement initiatives, generating a profit of VND 95.2 billion. These figures demonstrate that digital transformation is not limited to digitizing processes but has directly improved operational efficiency, productivity, and product value. Simultaneously, intelligent monitoring systems support risk control, early detection of anomalies, reduction of incidents and emissions, closely linking digital transformation with safety, environmental, and sustainable development goals.

According to Mr. Hoang Ngoc Tu, Deputy Director of Dung Quat Refinery, innovation and digital transformation at BSR have been implemented rapidly, directly linked to production and quantified by specific indicators, thereby increasing operating capacity and producing many new products.

BSR has built an innovation and digital transformation ecosystem closely linked to measurable efficiency. The entire process of managing ideas, initiatives, and scientific and technological tasks is digitized on a software platform, managing everything from proposal and evaluation to implementation and value measurement. As a result, initiatives are screened according to clear criteria such as increasing revenue, saving costs, improving safety and the environment, and aligning with the development strategy.

By 2025, hundreds of initiatives were recognized, generating a profit of VND 95.2 billion, with many solutions directly linked to digitalization and operational automation. More importantly, these results did not stop at testing but continued to be scaled up and integrated into standard processes, gradually building BSR's endogenous digital capabilities.

People remain at the center of digital transformation.

People are always at the heart of BSR's development strategy. Innovation and digital transformation are no exception; BSR always recognizes that digital transformation cannot succeed without the human element. Therefore, alongside investing in infrastructure and technology, the company focuses on developing digital human resources and building a culture of innovation.

Intensive training programs on AI, big data, scientific research methods, and research and development management have been implemented. BSR has organized practical training courses and technology application workshops to help its team of engineers and experts gradually master new technologies.

Digital transformation is also integrated into the KPI systems of the company's departments, turning innovation into shared responsibilities and motivations. Therefore, digital culture is not only present in technology projects, but gradually permeates management thinking, operations, and continuous improvement.

Entering the 2026-2030 period, BSR aims to take digital transformation to a higher level, from supporting operations to driving growth. Major directions include expanding the Digital Twin across the entire plant, applying AI in supply chain management, finance, smart maintenance, and strengthening data security.

Digital transformation is also seen as the foundation for BSR to implement strategic projects such as sustainable fuels (SAF), biofuels, premium petrochemicals, and other emission reduction solutions. In this context, digital technology not only helps optimize the present but also opens up opportunities for developing new business models.

Practical implementation shows that digital transformation at BSR is not just about software or equipment, but a comprehensive transformation of mindset, working methods, and corporate culture. When properly positioned, digital transformation has become a strategic leverage, helping BSR maintain its pivotal role in Vietnam's refining and petrochemical industry in the new energy era.
