Switching from Literature to History to have the opportunity to compete for excellent students, Quynh Trang took advantage, gradually fell in love and was crowned valedictorian nationwide.
At the end of January, Pham Quynh Trang, grade 1 specializing in History, Bien Hoa High School for the Gifted, Ha Nam, received the results of the national excellent student exam. The female student scored 12/18,5 points, won first prize in History, and was also the person with the highest score among nearly 20 candidates taking this subject.
"I just wanted to win third prize or higher, I never thought of becoming valedictorian," the female student said, saying that she once considered History as a "second option" to find opportunities to compete for excellent students. However, this move has helped me have a new passion, get accepted to a specialized school, and now have a ticket to go straight to university.
During her junior high school years, Quynh Trang was in the school's team of excellent students in Literature. In grade 9, seeing that it was difficult for her to compete in the provincial exam team for this subject, Trang proactively asked her teachers to let her try History.
Trang said, when she changed majors, the team selection exam only had one month left. I'm new, while you guys have been taking refresher courses for years. With no other choice, Trang "put her arms around her" to learn to chase.
The female student admitted that at that time she was trying to find a way to memorize and learn as quickly as possible. Trang's advantage is that she can generalize and present the problem in a more attractive way than just making bullet points. Trang believes that these are the skills she learned after many years in the team of talented students in Literature.
After winning second prize at the provincial level, Trang was accepted into the History class at Bien Hoa High School for the Gifted. Having studied deeply and methodically, female students realize that History is not dry, on the contrary, very attractive. I was also introduced to new perspectives from familiar events, so I felt like I was "opened to another world".
Having good academic ability, right from the 11th grade, Trang was part of the national excellent student competition team in History of Ha Nam province, winning third prize. This school year, the second time participating in the national competition, Trang aims to have a higher prize than last year.
The national history exam team of Ha Nam province was established in October 10 with 2023 students. Every day, outside of regular school time, students receive intensive training.
Because History is not just about memorizing and remembering dates and months, but students also need to understand the causes, impacts and effects of an event on other issues. Therefore, Trang finds learning using mind maps is the most effective, helping to cover knowledge and remember it for a long time. Female students usually go to bed at 0:XNUMX every day and rarely study later.
In her free time, Trang reads comics, watches movies and reads newspapers. Regularly updating current news helps you expand your vocabulary and gain more practical evidence.
The 18-year-old girl most enjoys studying modern Vietnamese history (1858-1945) with many events in the resistance war against the French and Americans. In contrast, female students rated world history as "more difficult to learn", especially about industrial revolutions.
This year's exam has 7 questions, total 20 points. Candidates take the test in 180 minutes. When receiving the exam, Trang was panicked because some of the content she had studied carefully did not appear.
Question 4, according to female students, is the most difficult. This question requires candidates to present new perceptions about the path of national salvation of progressive patriotic scholars in Vietnam from the early 1914th century to World War I in XNUMX, then comment on the impact of Those new perceptions came to the Vietnamese patriotic movement at that time.
Trang believes that the difficulty of the test is that candidates must know how to synthesize and generalize knowledge, then choose appropriate content to answer. The female student spent about 10 minutes carefully analyzing the question's requirements.
Initially, Trang thought that the general new point in the awareness of patriotic scholars in the early twentieth century was to save the country and the people, instead of patriotism (save the king, save the country) as in the previous period. But after evaluating the topic and seeing that the question mentioned "new perceptions", Trang decided to add other new points, based on the goals, forms, and fighting forces, with specific evidence.
In three hours, Trang wrote nearly 6 sheets of exam paper, leaving only a few minutes before the end of time to reread the test. The female student said that she was able to write so much and so quickly because a month before the exam, every day the whole team was given a test by the teacher with a format similar to the real exam.
“During the practice test, I often skipped 1-2 ideas because I couldn't finish them in time. So when I finished the real exam in the allowed time and wrote for a long time, I understood why the teacher let the whole team practice like that," Trang said.
As Trang's homeroom teacher since grade 10 and in charge of training the History team, Ms. Tran Anh Dao assessed that Trang has good memory, reasoning ability and logical thinking. These are important qualities to study History well.
During the learning process, Trang is self-aware and proactive. Trang's strength is thinking questions, requiring practical contact.
"Trang is a special student, I rarely meet anyone like that," Ms. Dao said, saying that even though she thought that Trang could win the first prize, the fact that her student became the valedictorian was still an unexpected and unexpected joy. hope.
Completing the national excellent student exam with excellent results, Trang can relax more than before, because many universities and academies directly recruit candidates who win national prizes.
"I am interested in the People's Security Academy and consider applying for admission to this school," the female student said.
