Recently, the Signing Ceremony to implement the Carbon Emission Reduction Project in Lam Son Sugarcane Raw Material Area was held in Thanh Hoa, marking the strategic cooperation between Lam Son Sugarcane Joint Stock Company (Lasuco) and two Japanese partners, Idemitsu Kosan Company and Sagri Company.
This is not only a pioneering project in reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also brings many practical benefits to thousands of local farming households, from improving productivity, increasing income to accessing the global carbon credit market.
Farmers are at the heart of the project
The Lam Son carbon emission reduction project focuses on applying a regenerative agriculture model, supported by Sagri’s advanced satellite analysis technology. According to the plan, the pilot phase from 2025 will apply to 500 hectares of sugarcane material areas, expanding to 8,000 hectares by 2026.
Mr. Le Van Phuong, General Director of Lam Son Sugarcane Joint Stock Company.
Mr. Le Van Phuong, General Director of Lam Son Sugarcane Joint Stock Company (Lasuco), affirmed: "Working with partners from the land of the rising sun, we have learned a lot from our Japanese friends. All profits from the project will be paid to farmers, helping them not only increase sugarcane productivity but also significantly improve their economic life. This is how we accompany farmers, creating sustainable and long-term value."
Lasuco is currently working with more than 130,000 farming households in 11 western districts of Thanh Hoa province. With this project, the company is committed to supporting farming households to improve their farming methods, moving towards more sustainable agriculture.
Through satellite analysis technology, sugarcane fields will be closely monitored, optimizing the fertilization process in terms of type, amount and timing. This will not only help reduce input costs but also increase crop yields.
Mr. Phuong added: "The application of modern technology helps farmers reduce their dependence on chemical fertilizers, thereby not only saving costs but also protecting their own health. We believe that sugarcane productivity will increase significantly, creating more stable and sustainable income for farmers."
Farmers will benefit from low-emission farming in their sugarcane fields.
A breakthrough of the project is that the carbon credits generated will be registered under the “Improved Agricultural Land Management” method (VM0042). This is an opportunity for farmers to participate in the international carbon credit market, opening up a new source of income.
In addition to economic benefits, the project also helps farmers access a regenerative farming model, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and protect land and water resources. This is a key factor in helping Vietnam's agricultural sector develop in a green and sustainable direction.
Sharing more with Dan Viet reporter, General Director of Lam Son Sugar Joint Stock Company emphasized: "The carbon credit created by the project will help raise the "green" brand of Lam Son sugar cane products in the global market. This is an inevitable trend, and Lasuco is confident in meeting all international standards from the US, Japan, to Europe, even the Halal Muslim market,... With this cooperation, we expect to bring our products to a new level, contributing to affirming the position of Vietnamese agriculture on the world map".
Handshake for sustainable Vietnamese agriculture
Mr. Egashira Hideaki, General Director of Idemitsu Vietnam, affirmed: "At Idemitsu Kosan, we always have a long-term vision for developing sustainable solutions in Vietnam, especially in the agricultural sector - a potential field that not only brings environmental benefits but also creates business opportunities from carbon credits. Through this project, we not only contribute to reducing carbon emissions in sustainable agriculture in Vietnam but also promote local economic development. This is part of the roadmap to balance stable energy supply and address climate change that Idemitsu is aiming for.
In the long term, we are committed to being a pioneer in the field of carbon neutral energy and solutions, with the goal of realizing a circular society by 2050. We also see agriculture and forestry as important sectors when considering the goal of carbon neutrality in Vietnam. If this pilot project proves to be effective in generating carbon credits, it will be an opportunity for us to expand and develop more potential business areas."
Mr. Egashira Hideaki, Head of Vietnam Development Department, Idemitsu Kosan Company and General Director of Idemitsu Vietnam Co., Ltd.
Idemitsu Vietnam's General Director also emphasized the strategic role of the project in the group's investment orientation: "The carbon emission reduction project in Lam Son sugarcane raw material area is an important step forward in the field of environmental regenerative agriculture in Vietnam. Idemitsu highly appreciates Vietnam's potential in developing sustainable agricultural models and reducing carbon emissions. We believe that regenerative agriculture is a field with great potential in the future. Therefore, Idemitsu is committed to continuing to promote this field in parallel with the clean energy and renewable energy projects that we are implementing."
"In addition to building effective economic models from agricultural projects, we will take advantage of the experience and business know-how accumulated over more than 30 years of operation in Vietnam, from 1992 to present, to develop new applications related to carbon emission reduction. Currently, Idemitsu has 8 projects stretching from North to South, and with the project in Lam Son, we do not only stop at sugarcane - the main subject of the project - but also research other crops such as coffee and rice, which have the potential to be deployed on a large scale. We believe that these crops will open up new directions in creating carbon credits, contributing positively to the sustainable development of Vietnamese agriculture in the future.", Mr. Egashira Hideaki affirmed.
Meanwhile, Mr. Hiroya Ishitsubo, Global Finance Director of Sagri, shared: "Vietnam is not only an agricultural powerhouse but also an ideal destination for developing carbon credit projects. After the project in Lam Son, we expect to expand to other crops such as rice and other areas, bringing the sustainable agriculture model to a new level."
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Le Duc Giang, Vice Chairman of Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, emphasized: "This project not only opens a new direction for Thanh Hoa's agricultural sector but also contributes to Vietnam's goal of zero net emissions. We expect that, with Lasuco's capacity, Sagri's progress and Idemitsu's investment, the project will be successful and become a model for replication."
Mr. Le Duc Giang, Provincial Party Committee member, Vice Chairman of Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee.
The Vice Chairman of Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee also emphasized the importance of supporting farmers: "Farmers are not only beneficiaries but also the center of every project. We hope that through this project, farmers' economic life will be improved, while at the same time actively contributing to environmental protection and sustainable development."
The project in Lam Son does not stop at sugarcane but also opens up opportunities to develop carbon credits from other crops such as bamboo - a crop with great potential in Thanh Hoa.
The Vice Chairman of Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee affirmed: "We are ready to create conditions for businesses such as Idemitsu and Sagri to research and expand projects to other fields. Thanh Hoa has enough potential to become a center for carbon credit development in Vietnam."
Lasuco, Idemitsu Kosan and Sagri signed a contract to implement the project to reduce carbon emissions in Lam Son sugarcane raw material area.
The project signing ceremony is not only an important step forward in sustainable agricultural development but also a testament to the close cooperation between Vietnam and Japan. With advanced technology, the support of businesses and the support of local authorities, the project promises to produce results beyond expectations.
The signing ceremony of the Carbon Emission Reduction Project in Lam Son Sugarcane Growing Area is an important first step, not only bringing great economic benefits to farmers but also contributing to affirming the position of Vietnamese agriculture on the world map. The project promises to be a model for replication in other regions and fields, contributing to realizing the goal of zero net emissions, while building a sustainable, modern agriculture in line with global trends.
