Tourist Rosa Swart witnessed a fight over prey between crocodiles and a pride of lions in Kruger National Park, South Africa, Latest Sigtings reported on July 11. According to Swart, the Shingwedzi River forms an integral part of the ecosystem in the heart of the national park. Herds of buffalo and lions frequently traverse the area. One of these lion prides brought down a large male buffalo.
Two lionesses and their cubs were enjoying a meal after a successful hunt. However, their feast was interrupted by a large crocodile. The crocodile emerged from the waterhole, crawled across the sandy bank towards the lioness and her cub, clearly intending to steal the buffalo carcass.
Driven by hunger, the lions refused to back down and give up the food. A tense confrontation ensued. The crocodile, unwilling to miss the opportunity, took a bite or two from the buffalo carcass. Initially, it chased the lions towards the embankment, but the lioness quickly realized the crocodile was no match for them on land. They returned to where the buffalo carcass was and finished their meal.
The African lion (Panthera leo) is primarily distributed in sub-Saharan Africa. It is the only feline species in the world that lives in prides. Female lions are the primary hunters, preying on antelopes, zebras, wildebeest, and other mammals. Male lions defend the pride's territory.
