Onana no longer has a place at Old Trafford. |
After months of uncertainty surrounding his return to Old Trafford, Andre Onana's future is finally beginning to look relatively smooth for both Manchester United and the Cameroonian goalkeeper himself.
Despite costing £47.2 million from Inter Milan, the 30-year-old goalkeeper has never managed to establish the necessary consistency in the Premier League.
According to the Daily Mail , Manchester United no longer intend to bring Onana back into the squad next season. The club's management believes that keeping a goalkeeper earning £120,000 a week on the bench is illogical, especially given the strong personality and flamboyant style of the former Inter Milan star.
In that context, Trabzonspor became the ideal option. Since joining the Turkish team on loan last September, Onana quickly regained his form. He played a major role in helping Trabzonspor reach the Turkish Cup final and repeatedly became a hero in important matches.
In particular, his three penalty saves against Samsunspor in the quarter-finals completely convinced the Trabzonspor management. Club president Ertugrul Dogan publicly stated that the team wanted to keep Onana if the conditions were right.
MU currently wants to rebuild the goalkeeping position around Senne Lammens, while also avoiding the risk of dressing room complications if Onana returns as a backup.
Trabzonspor isn't in a position to buy him outright, but a loan deal seems like a reasonable solution for all parties. MU would reduce their squad burden, and Onana could continue playing in a more suitable environment, free from the harsh pressure of playing in England.
At 30, the Cameroonian goalkeeper is still capable of playing at the highest level. Sometimes, leaving Old Trafford at the right time is the best way to salvage the career of a star who was once expected to achieve great things.
