According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue , a weather forecaster at the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, a widespread and intense heatwave is currently occurring in the northern and central provinces and cities of Vietnam.
Actual temperatures measured at 1 PM in Northern Vietnam and the eastern provinces from Gia Lai to Lam Dong ranged from 35-37°C, with some places exceeding 38°C, such as Vinh Yen (Phu Tho), Bac Ninh, Lang ( Hanoi ) at 38.8°C; Hoai Nhon (Gia Lai) at 38.2°C…

Actual temperatures recorded at 1 PM at several meteorological stations on May 23rd and 24th. |
In the area from Thanh Hoa to Da Nang City and the eastern part of Quang Ngai province, the temperature recorded at 1 PM was generally 37-38°C, with some places exceeding 38°C, such as Vinh station (Nghe An) 38.6°C; Ha Tinh 38.8°C; Ba Don (Quang Tri) 38.4°C; Quang Ngai 38.4°C…
Thus, with a recorded temperature of 38.8°C, Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Phu Tho, and Ha Tinh were the areas with the highest temperatures in the country at 1 PM today, May 24th.
Ms. Hue noted that this temperature was measured inside a meteorological tent at a height of 2 meters. The actual perceived temperature outdoors could differ by 2-4°C, or even more, depending on the surface conditions such as concrete or asphalt.
Ms. Hue added that, according to the latest forecast, the intense heatwave in both Northern and Central Vietnam will continue until around May 27-28.
Therefore, for the Northern region, from now until May 27th, hot and intensely hot weather will persist with daily maximum temperatures generally ranging from 36-38°C, and in some places exceeding 39°C.
In Hanoi, due to the combined effect of the urban heat island effect, temperatures rose even higher, reaching 37-39°C, with some areas experiencing exceptionally intense heat with temperatures exceeding 39°C.
From May 28th, which is next Thursday, the widespread heatwave is likely to end in the Northern region.
For provinces from Thanh Hoa to Da Nang City and the eastern part of Quang Ngai province, the hottest areas in the country, temperatures remain high at 37-40°C, with some places exceeding 40°C. For provinces and cities along the South Central coast, temperatures are lower, at 36-38°C.
"The hot weather in the central provinces will continue until around May 28th. From May 29th, the heat will tend to gradually subside. Thus, the heatwave in the central provinces will end about one day after the northern provinces," Ms. Hue informed.
The combined effects of hot weather and low humidity increase the risk of fires and explosions in densely populated areas due to high electricity demand; therefore, people need to be more vigilant.
