The Can Tho Customs Department reported that as of October 15th, the unit had collected 2,280 billion VND in revenue (exceeding the target by 3%), with over 339 billion VND collected in Can Tho alone (exceeding the target by 6%). In the coming period, Can Tho Customs will focus on facilitating the flow of goods and combating revenue loss.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee, said that at the recent conference on resolving difficulties and promoting transportation infrastructure in the Mekong Delta, the Prime Minister emphasized the development of waterway transportation, including seaports, river ports, and inland ports. Therefore, the city is focusing on and has high expectations for the construction of ports to serve the transportation of goods in the coming time. By the end of the year, Can Tho will complete the planning of its port system, including the newly established O Mon port.

"Previously, we always said Can Tho was the center of the Mekong Delta region, but there hasn't been any port planning. Cai Cui has a wharf only 180m long, Thot Not port has a wharf only 120m long and only one berth. Even with busy cargo traffic, one ship can fill up all the space. How can we ensure fast cargo flow and reduce logistics costs under such circumstances?" Mr. Hieu said.

According to the Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee, each barge can currently carry 150-200 containers of goods and operate in shallow waters where large cargo ships cannot enter. Using barges to transport goods from Can Tho to ports in Ho Chi Minh City will significantly reduce transportation costs, fuel, and manpower compared to road transport. This is a form of green transport that many countries around the world are adopting, and it is very advantageous for the Mekong Delta region.

Based on the current situation of ports in Can Tho, Mr. Hieu suggested that the City People's Committee direct relevant departments and units to promptly complete the city's port planning. Following this, land acquisition and auctioning to select port investors should be carried out. Once the port is operational, Can Tho Customs should coordinate the establishment of Customs Sub-departments at the port to facilitate the flow of goods through the port.

Previously, the O Mon port (O Mon district) was considered by Can Tho City for a new development plan, inviting investors, with the function of a general cargo and container port. Located in the heart of the Mekong Delta, with approximately 60km of the Hau River flowing through its territory, Can Tho City boasts several seaports such as Cai Cui Port, Hoang Dieu Port, Tra Noc - O Mon Port, and Thot Not Port. In 2023, the volume of goods handled through Can Tho's seaports reached 4.48 million tons.
