Typically, upon entering 9th grade, students have a packed school schedule, and most also attend extra classes at tutoring centers or with their teachers. Students in affluent, densely populated areas face even greater pressure from these extra classes due to the high competition for admission to 10th grade.
The 10th grade entrance exam season has officially begun. Candidates will take the entrance exam for the High School for the Gifted (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City) on May 25th and 26th. This is the first public school in Ho Chi Minh City to hold its 10th grade entrance exam this year.
Overwhelmed by a packed school schedule.
Taking multiple extra classes per day in addition to regular school lessons and studying with many different teachers/subjects can overwhelm students and may not be effective without proper study and revision methods. Especially now, with the 10th grade entrance exam approaching, students who don't remember and consolidate key knowledge will struggle when they take the exam.
As they prepare for the 10th grade entrance exam, many students feel pressured and overwhelmed due to their packed schedules and the large amount of material they need to review. They not only attend extra classes at school as planned but also take additional courses at other institutions to gain more knowledge.
Parents also want their children to dedicate all their time to studying, so they are willing to create the best possible conditions. Many parents are willing to arrange to take their children to and from extra classes multiple times a day. In general, families with children preparing for the 10th grade entrance exam will be much busier.
Studying too much can easily lead to knowledge dilution and boredom.
In fact, extra tutoring before the 10th grade entrance exam is necessary, but it's not essential to have too many teachers for each subject. Some students study the same subject with 2-3 different teachers simultaneously. This leads to diluted knowledge and boredom because the same lessons have to be reviewed repeatedly at the same time.
Parents whose children are taking the entrance exam for the 10th grade at the Gifted High School: 'Whether our child passes or not, the family will still be very relaxed.'
As a teacher currently teaching 9th grade and preparing students for the 10th grade entrance exam at my school, and also as a parent, I understand the difficulties faced by 9th graders. However, it's not always effective for students to study a single subject with multiple teachers.
A specific example is that last year my child was in 9th grade, but he only took extra math classes; for the other subjects, he studied according to the regular school schedule. Yet, at the end of the year, he still passed the entrance exam to the provincial specialized high school.
Because my child only attends extra math classes, the day isn't too stressful, and there's still time to play and rest. Since my child only attends three evening math classes a week, they study at school in the mornings and spend about two hours at home resting and studying on their own in the afternoons.
Therefore, if students attend extra classes, they should only study with one teacher per subject. This is much better than studying with multiple teachers for the same subject, because each teacher has a different style and method of teaching. Studying with many teachers can easily lead to distractions, which may not necessarily improve their performance on exams. Students only need to study with one teacher per subject, but that teacher must be excellent, dedicated, and experienced. This helps students grasp the knowledge and understand how to approach exam questions quickly and effectively.
Parents wait for their children outside an after-school tutoring class for 10th grade.
Self-learning is important.
Besides reviewing the knowledge taught in class, self-study skills are very important. During the final review period, students should organize their knowledge using mind maps, keeping each topic concise and organized. It's crucial for students to understand the exam structure, which their regular teachers will explain thoroughly. Additionally, students should refer to past exam papers from their local area, attempt to solve some practice tests, and compare their answers.
Any areas of knowledge that are still unclear or not fully understood can be further studied online. Currently, there are many free online lectures available. Learning and reviewing online will help students save time, as they don't have to travel to the teacher's house. The travel time can sometimes take an hour or more. Moreover, tutoring classes often have large class sizes, so they may not be as effective as self-study and online review at home.
With the 10th grade entrance exam fast approaching, rushing to attend numerous extra classes with multiple teachers/subjects and a packed schedule will only exhaust and overwhelm students. Instead, students need to be more selective and cultivate a spirit of self-study. Crucially, parents should always create a positive environment and a supportive family setting for their children to avoid negative influences during exam preparation, helping them achieve the best possible results.
