According to the Drug Crime Investigation Department of the Provincial Police, the age of drug addicts has recently become younger. They use synthetic drugs that suppress the nervous system, making them very susceptible to drug-induced psychosis and affecting local security and order.
Committing crimes while under the influence of methamphetamine.
Recently, public outrage erupted over the actions of a woman allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine who caused the death of her 2-year-old child while trying to put him to sleep. The suspect, Nguyen Thi Phuong Th. (born in 1995, from An Giang province), is currently being detained for investigation into the alleged murder.

According to initial investigations, T. worked at a karaoke bar and lived with her two young children in a rented room in Tan Dinh ward, Ben Cat town. On the evening of May 16th, T. returned home from work (already drunk) and lay down under the hammock where her child, A., was sleeping. While T. was sleeping, she heard her child crying, so she rocked the hammock, but the child wouldn't stop crying. T. then hit the child forcefully several times. When the child stopped crying, T. went back to sleep. Around 11 PM that same day, T. woke up and discovered that A. was no longer breathing and her body was turning blue, so she asked someone to take her child to the hospital for emergency treatment. However, the victim died before arriving at the hospital due to multiple injuries.
During questioning by investigators, T. admitted to hitting his child multiple times with his hands but claimed he didn't know exactly where he hit. T. had previously used methamphetamine ("crystal meth").
Recently, the province has witnessed numerous tragic incidents involving individuals linked to methamphetamine ("crystal meth"). According to statistics from the provincial police, from 2019 to mid-April 2021, 53 cases of individuals under the influence of methamphetamine committing dangerous acts against society occurred in Binh Duong province. Specifically, there was the case of Bui Thien Em (from Ca Mau , temporarily residing in Binh Thang ward, Di An city) who, under the influence of methamphetamine, hugged a gas cylinder, shouted, and set fire to a rented room, causing residents to flee in panic. Another case involved Nguyen Van Thanh (21 years old), who, under the influence of methamphetamine, broke into a rented room, locked a victim inside, and threatened to detonate a gas cylinder. There was also the case of Le Van Quyet (33 years old, residing in An Binh commune, Phu Giao district), who, while under the influence of methamphetamine, stabbed his own mother and then attempted suicide with scissors…
The behavior is becoming increasingly dangerous.
According to authorities, drug addiction has been and continues to cause serious harm to public security and social life. Once addicted, users have an ever-increasing need for drugs. To obtain money to satisfy their cravings, addicts are willing to commit dangerous acts, including crimes.
As of the end of 2022, the province was managing 3,128 drug addicts, a decrease of 110 people, equivalent to 3.4%, compared to the same period in 2021. Of these, 2,040 were addicts in the community; 466 were in temporary detention centers; and 622 were in rehabilitation facilities. Notably, the age of addicts is increasingly younger, mainly concentrated in areas with many industrial zones, areas with many worker dormitories, and border areas.
In reality, crime prevention efforts show that drug-related crimes and drug addicts are the main perpetrators of serious and especially serious crimes. Recently, drug addicts have tended to switch to using synthetic drugs. The most common are methamphetamine (crystal meth), MDMA (ecstasy), and synthetic cannabis (synthetic marijuana). Under the influence of drugs on the nervous system, these individuals experience psychosis ("meth-induced psychosis"), leading to behaviors that harm the health and lives of others, disrupt public order, and cause extremely serious consequences for the economy and social security.
In light of the above situation, functional agencies and organizations in the province have simultaneously implemented solutions to gradually control and reduce drug addiction and drug abuse. However, according to Lieutenant Colonel Do Ngoc An, Head of the Drug Crime Investigation Department of the Provincial Police, to effectively combat drug abuse, it is necessary to promote the role of grassroots forces. In particular, each citizen should act as a drug awareness campaigner in their community. “Given the continued complexity of drug-related crimes, it is necessary to further promote the role of grassroots forces and the people in prevention work. Simultaneously, the drug crime prevention police force will always support and work closely with the grassroots to gradually reduce drug-related crimes in the community,” Lieutenant Colonel Do Ngoc An stated.
| In recent years, drug addicts in Vietnam have been shifting from using naturally derived drugs to synthetic drugs. These drugs are highly addictive and have strong toxicity, affecting the addict's nervous system. Synthetic drugs also suppress the central nervous system, causing users to experience hallucinations, lose control and regulate their behavior, leading to psychosis and "meth-induced psychosis," resulting in very dangerous behaviors for society. |
