Accordingly, since May 13, 2023, several cases of acute food poisoning related to botulinum toxin have occurred in Thu Duc City due to the purchase and consumption of food products without clear origin or labeling, from street vendors.
Another cluster of botulinum infections has emerged after people ate Vietnamese pork sausage, but the antidote is no longer available.
On May 14th, Children's Hospital 2 Three siblings from the same family (residing in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) were admitted to the hospital due to progressively worsening lower limb weakness and respiratory failure, suspected to be caused by botulinum poisoning. According to their family, the three children had previously eaten pork sausage of unknown origin that appeared spoiled. By the afternoon of the same day, the three children began experiencing dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
Subsequently, on May 20th, information from Cho Ray Hospital indicated that the hospital, along with Gia Dinh People's Hospital and the Tropical Diseases Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City), had consulted and identified three more suspected cases of botulinum poisoning. All three patients are from Thu Duc City; two are brothers, aged 18 and 26, and the third is a 45-year-old man. According to their medical history, the two brothers had eaten Vietnamese sausage sandwiches, while the man had consumed fermented fish sauce that had been left out for a long time. Test results from Gia Dinh People's Hospital confirmed that the patients were infected with botulinum toxin originating from food.
Currently, the inter-agency food safety inspection team of Thu Duc City is investigating and handling cases of food poisoning and botulinum toxin contamination related to pork sausage and bread purchased from street vendors in the area. Therefore, people need to be more vigilant when consuming these types of food; if there are any doubts about the quality of the food, stop using it. If you experience health problems or suspect you have consumed unsafe pork sausage and bread, go to the hospital for examination as soon as possible.
People should pay attention to the quality of food before consuming it.
