May 14, Children's Hospital 2 received 3 cases of siblings in the same family (living in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) admitted to the hospital due to progressive weakness in lower limbs, respiratory failure suspected of botulinum poisoning. According to family members, the 3 children had previously eaten pork roll of unknown origin, showing signs of spoilage. By the afternoon of the same day, the 3 children began to feel dizzy, nauseous, vomit, have stomachaches, and have diarrhea.

Then, on May 20, information from Cho Ray Hospital said that this unit, along with Gia Dinh People's Hospital and Tropical Diseases Hospital (HCMC), consulted and discovered 3 more cases of suspected botulinum poisoning. All 3 patients are in Thu Duc City, including 2 brothers aged 18 and 26, the remaining person is a 45-year-old man. Taking medical history, the 2 brothers had previously eaten bread with pork sausage, the man had eaten fish sauce that had been left for a long time. Test results from Gia Dinh People's Hospital showed that the patients were infected with botulinum poisoning originating from food.

Currently, the Thu Duc City Food Safety Inspection Team is investigating and handling cases of food poisoning and botulinum poisoning related to pork sausage and bread purchased from street vendors in the area. Therefore, people need to be vigilant when using these foods. If there is any doubt about the quality of the food, they should stop using it. If there are health problems or suspicions that they have used unsafe pork sausage and bread products, they should go to the hospital for examination as soon as possible.

People should pay attention to the quality of food before using it.

Botulinum poisoning is usually caused by consuming foods containing this toxin. Botulinum poisoning is an extremely dangerous and potentially fatal condition caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium exists in low-oxygen environments, such as soil, mud, waste, and spoiled food. Botulinum toxin has the ability to attack the nervous system and cause severe symptoms.

Commonly contaminated foods include canned foods that have not been properly prepared, frozen foods that have not been properly frozen, spoiled foods, etc. When a consumer eats food containing botulinum toxin, the bacteria will grow in the small intestine and produce more toxin. This toxin will then enter the nervous system, causing poisoning.

Symptoms of botulinum poisoning may include: fatigue, difficulty breathing, difficulty speaking, difficulty swallowing, difficulty urinating, and impaired muscle function. Headaches, insomnia, blurred vision, and difficulty concentrating may also occur. In severe cases, botulinum poisoning can lead to muscle paralysis, loss of mobility, and even death.

If you suspect you have botulism poisoning, seek medical attention immediately. Your doctor will perform tests and diagnoses to determine the cause of your symptoms. It is important not to self-treat or wait for the condition to resolve on its own, as botulism poisoning can have serious and life-threatening consequences.
