A model for collecting pesticide packaging in the fields of Nguyen Son village, Thieu Hoa commune.
Thanh Hoa province has a large agricultural production area, resulting in a high demand for pesticides in cultivation. Previously, after each harvest, it was not uncommon to find empty pesticide bottles and packaging left in the fields or floating in irrigation canals, posing a risk of water and soil pollution and directly affecting human health.
Over the years, the Provincial Farmers' Association has intensified its efforts to raise awareness among its members, build and implement models for collecting pesticide waste in the fields, and this has proven effective. This has contributed to reducing environmental pollution in the fields and raising awareness among farmers about safe and sustainable agricultural production.
In the fields of Dien Lu commune, pesticide packaging containers are placed in convenient locations, near internal roads and irrigation canals. After each spraying, people no longer carelessly throw empty bottles into the fields as before, but instead bring them to the designated disposal sites. To achieve this change, the Dien Lu Commune Farmers' Association has intensified its efforts to raise awareness among households about environmental protection. With the support of the local government, the Farmers' Association has installed 54 pesticide packaging containers in concentrated production areas. At the same time, they regularly organize environmental sanitation campaigns to collect waste in the fields. As a result, farmers in the commune have developed the habit of collecting used pesticide packaging, contributing to reducing environmental pollution in the fields.
In Thieu Hoa commune, "Farmers' Groups for Collecting Pesticide Packaging in the Right Way" have been established in almost all villages, each with 5 members. The groups have specific operating regulations and maintain regular monthly meetings to disseminate knowledge on safe pesticide use, encourage members to sign commitments to collect packaging according to regulations, and strengthen inspection and supervision to promptly detect acts causing environmental pollution. Thanks to the efforts of the farmer members, the amount of discarded packaging, bottles, and agricultural waste in the commune has significantly decreased compared to before. The awareness of the people in environmental protection has been raised. This is an important foundation for the locality and farmers to move towards safe and sustainable agricultural production.
In Thanh Hoa province , from 2021 to the present, farmers' associations at all levels have organized 80,000 propaganda sessions via loudspeakers and integrated them into branch and group meetings to disseminate environmental protection laws to officials and members; and developed many models such as "Collecting pesticide packaging in the fields," "Collecting garbage in canals and ditches," and "Clearing vegetation along rural roads." Many localities in the province have been implementing and expanding these models. According to a report from the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the entire province has built 28,300 containers for pesticide packaging and solid waste. Waste in these containers is collected periodically 2 to 4 times a year and then handed over to the relevant authorities for processing according to regulations. As a result, the amount of waste remaining in the fields has significantly decreased, contributing to limiting water and agricultural land pollution.
Mr. Vu Tien Dung, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Farmers' Association, said: "The Association will continue to coordinate with relevant units to maintain and expand models for collecting pesticide packaging; strengthen propaganda and guidance for people to use pesticides safely and correctly, and collect and process waste after use according to regulations; contributing to jointly protecting a green, clean, and beautiful environment associated with building new rural areas."
In reality, localities that do a good job of raising awareness have seen a significant improvement in people's consciousness. Fields that were once littered with agricultural waste are now cleaner, and the production environment has improved considerably. From small containers placed in the middle of the fields, a new habit is gradually forming: an awareness of not littering, a responsibility towards public health, and a way for farmers to work together to build a green, clean, and sustainable agricultural system.
