Khanh Hoa A 6-year-old boy was sent to extra classes by his mother during the summer, but was beaten by the teacher until his buttocks were bruised because he was slow to learn after less than a month.
On June 29, the leader of the People's Committee of Phuoc Hoa Ward, Nha Trang City, said that they had inspected the classroom of Ms. Dang Thi Phuong - where the boy was beaten. Authorities determined that Ms. Phuong was teaching extra classes illegally, and the police worked with her to continue to verify the incident.
Ms. Le Quynh Phuong, the boy's mother, said she learned about this class through an acquaintance. Because her son was slow to learn, she wanted to send him to extra classes during the summer to improve his spelling and writing. Ms. Dang Thi Phuong tutors at home, and the class has 5 students, including her son.
"However, the incident happened less than a month after my child started school," said Quynh Phuong, adding that yesterday when she picked her child up from school, the child complained of pain in his buttocks and mouth due to being hit by a wooden ruler. When she got home, she discovered that her child had many bruises on his buttocks and bleeding lips. The mother immediately reported the incident and took her child for a disability assessment.
"Last night she called to apologize and said she would refund the money for the two days the child had not studied, adding that she beat the child because he could not study," said Ms. Phuong.

Ms. Dang Thi Phuong also admitted to hitting the student, but only used a wooden ruler to hit his buttocks, "not causing injuries to his mouth or head." According to her, the boy often did not concentrate, affecting the classmates around him. The boy was slow to learn, so she used a ruler to hit his buttocks to help him improve. After the family complained, she apologized and offered to provide medical support.
"I wrote a report and was asked to stop tutoring," she said.
Mr. Tran Nguyen Lap, Head of the Departmentof Education and Training of Nha Trang City, said that extra teaching and learning at primary level is against the regulations. In addition, violent behavior towards children is not recommended.
Incidents of students being beaten in spontaneous groups and classes have occurred frequently recently.
