The story after the flood...

This story was recorded at a junior high school in Hanoi, right after the historic flood caused by the remnants of Typhoon Matmo devastated Thai Nguyen.

During a sixth-grade class at a school in Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi, a young girl from Thai Nguyen province was worried about the devastating floods ravaging her hometown. Her grandparents and relatives were all in the flood-affected areas. Every day, her mother updated her on the situation, and the girl shared her mother's anxiety and stress.

On October 9-10, the teachers who had classes in the classroom shared information about the flooding situation in Thai Nguyen and spoke to their students about the hardships faced by people in the flooded areas, especially after learning that one of the students in the class was from Thai Nguyen.

During the geography lesson, the teacher explained in detail, from a professional perspective, the damage suffered by people in the flood-affected areas. Suddenly, a male student's voice rang out:

- You just have to put up with it there!

The boys at the same table chimed in:

Yes! You have to put up with it there!

The voice was low, but loud enough for the whole class to hear.

The teacher stopped lecturing.

The whole class was silent.

The little girl from Thai Nguyen burst into tears!

The whole class thought to themselves: This time, that group will definitely get a reprimand from the teacher!

The teacher said sternly:

Whoever said that, stand up!

The whole class was tense. Dozens of pairs of eyes turned towards the group of friends who had just spoken.

One student, two students, then four students stand up.

The teacher paused for a moment, suppressing the emotions that were about to burst out. Then, to the surprise of the whole class, she said:

- I'm asking four of you, divided into two groups, to prepare presentations for me. Group 1: The situation of storms and floods and the damage in Thai Nguyen. Group 2: The efforts of the people and local authorities of Thai Nguyen province in overcoming the consequences of the floods and the joint support and assistance from people nationwide. Tomorrow morning, at the beginning of class, the groups will present, remembering to include illustrative images.

If you can't do it yourselves, you can ask your parents for help. I will listen to the presentations from both groups along with the homeroom teacher. If there is no presentation, your ethics and academic scores will be 0. Now, please focus on the lesson.

The whole class listened to the teacher's lecture in silence. The little girl from Thai Nguyen had also stopped crying.

The very next morning, the homeroom teacher came to attend the class presentation. The two groups of four male students had prepared quite thoroughly for their presentations. Many images were shown, depicting devastation, pain, and heartwarming human kindness. After the groups finished their presentations, their voices trembled and lowered as if they were about to cry. One student, speaking on behalf of his group, expressed:

- I'm sorry, teacher, we were wrong.

- We're sorry, we were wrong.

The teacher said:

- You were wrong. But now you've admitted your mistake. I won't blame you anymore. But you must remember: The sense of brotherhood is extremely sacred to Vietnamese people, and never hurt others' feelings, even in a joke!

The girl from Thai Nguyen also stood up and said:

- Thank you, teacher and classmates, for sharing with me and the people of Thai Nguyen. Please don't blame my classmates anymore. They only spoke carelessly; I know they didn't mean anything by it. I am very touched by the love and support I have received from my classmates and the whole class. I really hope to have the opportunity to invite you all to visit my hometown of Thai Nguyen someday.

That's the story told by a little girl from Thai Nguyen. She cried while telling it, not out of self-pity, but out of emotion. I also teared up, moved and admiring the teachers' humane and pedagogical handling of the situation.

And, as I learned, even before the floodwaters in Thai Nguyen had receded, teachers and many students, along with the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, had donated numerous items to support the Thai Nguyen Department of Education and Training. I was moved to tears because among the countless vehicles heading to Thai Nguyen to provide assistance, there were also notebooks filled with love from the four students who had just given their presentations.
