Mr. Duong Quang Chien, residing in Da Bac village, is one of the pioneering households in Hoang Hoa Tham commune in cultivating medicinal plants. Having studied traditional medicine, Mr. Chien recognized the abundance of valuable medicinal plants in the forests of Chi Linh that needed conservation. Therefore, in 2014, he and his wife converted 1 hectare of production forest land to cultivate medicinal plants. Initially lacking experience in planting and caring for these plants, Mr. Chien independently researched the characteristics of each type to adjust his care methods, and then propagated the plants himself.

After nearly 10 years, Mr. Chien's garden alone has thousands of medicinal plants growing at the top. At the bottom, Mr. Chien also takes advantage of the space to plant shade-loving plants such as Acanthopanax and Coptis chinensis. His family's rice fields have also been converted to growing medicinal plants such as honeysuckle, goldenrod, Phyllanthus niruri, and Rhus chinensis.

Besides selling his own produce, Mr. Chien also exports finished herbal products to pharmaceutical manufacturers inside and outside the province. “My family goes to the forest ourselves to find medicinal plants to grow. If people want to grow these medicinal plants, they can come to me; I’m happy to share the seeds and guide them on how to care for them to preserve these valuable medicinal plant varieties,” Mr. Chien said. Each year, after deducting expenses, Mr. Chien’s family earns over 200 million VND in profit from medicinal plants.

Hoang Hoa Tham commune currently has the largest area of medicinal plant cultivation in Chi Linh City, with over 25 hectares, accounting for approximately 40% of the city's total medicinal plant cultivation area. The entire commune has 70 households growing various medicinal plants, with an average income exceeding 200 million VND per hectare… “Based on the effectiveness of medicinal plants, Hoang Hoa Tham commune encourages people to switch crops and expand cultivation areas according to the plan,” said Ms. Tran Thi Bich Thuan, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Hoang Hoa Tham commune.

Chi Linh is also a locality chosen by many organizations to implement research projects on the cultivation of medicinal herbs. In the last 5 years, communes and wards in Chi Linh such as Hoang Hoa Tham, Bac An, Ben Tam, Hoang Tien, Cong Hoa… have been selected as testing grounds for cultivating valuable medicinal plants. The Hanoi Center for Research on Cultivation and Processing of Medicinal Plants (Institute of Medicinal Materials) selected Sao Do and Cong Hoa wards to conduct trials of Asparagus cochinchinensis, Dong Lac ward to cultivate turmeric and Centella asiatica; and Bac An and Hoang Hoa Tham communes were chosen to produce Lonicera japonica according to GACP-WHO standards… When participating in these projects, growers must strictly adhere to the requirements for plant quality… These projects have also contributed to bringing new medicinal plant varieties to the hilly areas of Chi Linh.

According to statistics, Chi Linh City currently has 64 hectares of medicinal plant cultivation, including many high - value varieties such as honeysuckle, Phyllanthus niruri, Rhus chinensis, and Rhus chinensis. Preliminary assessments indicate that the economic benefits from medicinal plants are 3-4 times higher than those from rice and peanut cultivation. Importantly, cultivating medicinal plants requires strict adherence to cultivation and care regimens, avoiding the use of pesticides, thus significantly contributing to environmental protection, especially soil conservation.

Developing medicinal plants is now considered a new direction for Chi Linh City. Localities with suitable land are also encouraging people to switch to growing medicinal plants, which provides both economic value and environmental protection, aiming for sustainable economic development.

However, medicinal plant growers are facing difficulties in preserving and processing them into dried herbs, so they are easily spoiled during harvest season, affecting product quality and selling price.

To maximize the value of medicinal plants, Chi Linh City is also aiming to plan medicinal plant cultivation areas and apply high technology to improve product quality. At the same time, it is utilizing the forest ecosystem to create medicinal gardens under the forest canopy in suitable locations.

Chi Linh City has many advantages for spiritual tourism , resort tourism, and community tourism… If the medicinal plant growing area is linked to the development of experiential tourism, it will help supplement tourism products and contribute to the development of the local economy.
