In recent years, the macadamia nut cultivation model of Mr. Le Xuan Cuong's family in Zone 3, Vinh Lai Commune, Lam Thao District, has initially yielded positive economic results, opening up a new direction and developing the potential and advantages, creating a new agricultural product for the locality. This is also the first model in the province to successfully cultivate macadamia nuts with delicious flavor.

Mr. Le Xuan Cuong's family invested in a machine for shelling and sorting macadamia nuts.

Mr. Le Xuan Cuong shared: “Through research on mass media, I learned about macadamia trees. After a period of research and accumulating knowledge, in September 2011 I boldly purchased 200 macadamia trees from the Forestry Seed Research Center in Ba Vi, Hanoi , and planted them on an area of 6,000 square meters in the Dong Duong area. By the third year, the trees began to bear fruit, and by the sixth year, they had a stable yield. Macadamia nuts have high nutritional content, can be stored for a long time without spoiling, and command a high price, making them popular in the market.”

To facilitate the development of this model, the departments, units, and professional staff of the district and commune regularly pay attention to, support, and accompany Mr. Tran's family in implementing the technical guidelines for planting, caring for, processing, and preserving macadamia nuts issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , adhering to high-tech macadamia production processes, good agricultural practices (VietGAP, GlobalGAP...), and organic farming to create high-quality, safe macadamia products.

The macadamia trees are growing and developing well, initially adapting to the local climate and soil.

Comrade Vuong Van Ung - Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Lai commune, said: "Macadamia trees have initially shown suitability to the local climate and soil, increasing people's income, contributing to the shift in agricultural structure, linked to building new rural areas and civilized residential areas, while also developing potential and advantages and creating distinctive products, and developing the socio-economic development of the locality."

After mastering the techniques and care methods to ensure high fruit yield, Mr. Cuong continued to buy 100 more saplings to plant. To date, his family's macadamia trees are growing and developing well on an area of 1.5 hectares with a total of over 300 trees, of which nearly 200 are currently producing fruit. On average, each tree yields 10 kg of dried nuts, selling at 250,000 - 300,000 VND/kg for cracked shell dried nuts, generating hundreds of millions of VND in income per year. His family's macadamia nut production is currently insufficient to meet market demand, and his macadamia cultivation model has attracted many people from within and outside the province to visit, learn from his experience, and replicate his model.

Vinh Lai commune is finalizing the necessary documents and procedures to register its macadamia nut product as a 3-star OCOP product.

To continuously improve product quality, in addition to following proper planting and care techniques, Mr. Cuong has invested in several pieces of equipment and machinery applying scientific and technological advancements for initial processing, such as fruit peeling machines, seed sorting machines, moisture-reducing dryers, seed dryers, and seed scoring machines.

Ms. Dang Thi Thu Hien, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Lam Thao District, said: “The district aims to develop macadamia nut products from Vinh Lai commune to meet OCOP 3-star standards in 2024; providing the commune with some equipment, machinery, facilities, seedlings, etc., to expand the scale and develop the product.”

Given the effectiveness of the model, Vinh Lai commune is finalizing the necessary documents and procedures to register its macadamia nut product as a 3-star OCOP product by the end of this year, opening up a new direction for the local agricultural product.
