Lukaku's father passed away at the age of 58. |
On his personal page, Romelu posted a childhood photo with his father, along with a touching message: "Thank you, Dad, for teaching me everything I know. I will always be grateful and appreciate you. Life will never be the same again."
"My father always protected and guided me in ways no one else could. I will never be myself again. Pain and tears welled up, but I believe God will give me the strength to get back on my feet," the Napoli striker concluded.
Immediately afterwards, a series of condolences were sent to Lukaku's family. The Belgian Football Federation (RBFA) wrote in a statement: "We extend our condolences to Lukaku's family on the passing of Roger Lukaku." Many figures in the football world also sent heart emojis and words of encouragement to Romelu.
Roger Lukaku was born in 1967 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was a professional footballer. Roger moved to Belgium to sign with Rupel Boom, and subsequently played for several clubs including KV Oostende, Seraing, Germinal Ekeren, and KV Mechelen.
Despite a less-than-glorious career, he is remembered for instilling a love of football in his two sons, Romelu and Jordan Lukaku. Romelu, in particular, is considered one of the greatest strikers in Belgian football history.
