Cut down three red sandalwood trees by Hoan Kiem Lake

Hanoi City Green Tree Park Company cut down three red sưa trees around Hoan Kiem Lake, Hoan Kiem District, after many years of drying out.

On the morning of May 24, the felling area was cordoned off to ensure safety. Workers used cranes and chainsaws to cut the rosewood trees into short pieces. Each piece was counted, measured, and recorded. The felling took place over two days, May 24-25.

Three dead red sưa trees are scattered around Hoan Kiem Lake, of which the tree opposite the Lo Su - Dinh Tien Hoang intersection, near The Huc bridge, has a diameter of 59 cm, is 12 m high, and was determined to have died in 2019. The remaining two trees near the Swiss flower clock, have a diameter of 35-40 cm, and have not yet determined the time of death.

The felled timber will be handed over to the Hanoi Technical Infrastructure Management Center for preservation and liquidation. At the felled location, the City Green Tree Parks Company Limited will replace it with new trees.

Around Hoan Kiem Lake, there are about 40 red sưa trees out of a total of 700 shade trees. This tree species belongs to group 1A in the Vietnam Red Book, has high economic value and has been banned from commercial exploitation since 1994.
