On December 12, OpenAI announced that it was working to fix an issue where its artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT and video creator Sora were unexpectedly inaccessible.
"We have identified the issue and are working on a fix," OpenAI announced on X at around 8 AM on December 12 (Vietnam time).
According to Downdetector, the outage reportedly began around 7:00 AM on December 12th (Vietnam time). Several services of the US-based company were affected, and most of the reported incidents involved ChatGPT.
User reports regarding the recent ChatGPT outage in the US peaked at 28,478.
According to Tuoi Tre Online reporters, ChatGPT is currently operating normally in Vietnam.
According to CNBC, ChatGPT was down for over four hours recently. In June, ChatGPT experienced a similar situation when it was down for more than five hours.
In early December, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the company's technology was reaching 300 million active users per week. In a funding round in October 2024 that included participation from Microsoft and Nvidia, OpenAI was valued at $157 billion.
Apple recently announced that it has released a new software version for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that includes ChatGPT.
Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Threads experienced global outages.
Early morning on December 12th, Vietnam time, the Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Threads applications from tech giant Meta simultaneously stopped working globally due to a "technical issue".
In a social media post, Meta acknowledged that the issue was affecting some users' access to the app. Meta is working to fix it as soon as possible and apologizes to all affected customers.
A similar announcement also appeared on Instagram. WhatsApp also confirmed the outage affecting its cross-platform messaging app, stating that they are working on a solution and noting that users had begun messaging normally again as of 1:49 AM on December 12th, Vietnam time.
The website Downdetector.com, which tracks outages of social media apps, showed that the problem began around 10:00 AM Pacific Time on December 11th (approximately 1:00 AM on December 12th in Vietnam). The number of affected users surged to over 97,000 at 10:00 AM. Meanwhile, Instagram recorded over 67,000 reported outages.
Meta is currently investigating the cause of this issue.
