Fire in district police headquarters in Ho Chi Minh City

Smoke and fire broke out fiercely at the District 12 Police headquarters, on Truong Thi Hoa Street, Tan Thoi Hiep Ward, causing panic among neighboring residential areas, on the morning of February 3.

At around midnight, a fire broke out near the temporary detention house and covered warehouse for administrative violation vehicles of District 12 Police. Many soldiers on duty in the headquarters used mini fire extinguishers to put out the fire, but were unsuccessful. The fire broke out fiercely, accompanied by billowing black smoke spreading out into the residential area, causing panic among many people.

Ms. Huong, who lives next to the scene, said that after the loud explosion, the electricity went out and black smoke spread into the house, causing her family to suffocate and run outside. "I was in the house when the explosion sounded and it felt like the walls and glass doors were shaking," Ms. Huong said.

According to some witnesses, the explosion may have been caused by an electrical battery inside the headquarters, the location of the fire is where motorbikes are kept.

Several fire trucks and more than 30 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. The 400-meter stretch of road in front of the police station was blocked off. Firefighters pulled water hoses to put out the fire.

About 10 minutes later, the fire was under control. Authorities are still assessing the damage and investigating the cause.
