According to CCTV on November 29, the Work Safety Commission of the State Council of China issued a notice to launch a campaign to inspect and handle serious fire and explosion hazards in high-rise buildings.

Inspections will focus on the use of combustible materials, structures that are likely to catch fire, as well as materials such as bamboo scaffolding or non-fireproof safety nets.

CCTV quoted the notice as emphasizing the need for local authorities to enhance their responsibility, prioritize both development and safety, and consider reviewing and overcoming fire risks in high-rise buildings as a key task. The agency also requested to strengthen supervision and inspection to ensure practical effectiveness.

The announcement comes after a catastrophic fire in Hong Kong that killed at least 128 people - one of the worst disasters the city has faced in decades.

The fire shocked Hong Kong, which is densely populated and has some of the tallest apartment buildings in the world .
