'Sister Sứ' wins first prize at the Golden Rice Award.

In the final ranking round of the 2021 Golden Rice Award, held on the afternoon of March 5th at the VOH Theater (Voice of the People of Ho Chi Minh City Radio Station), contestant Bien Thi Kim Thuy (from Bac Lieu) won first prize for her role as Sister Su (excerpt from "Echoes of Hon Cave") to the enthusiastic applause of the audience.

It's been a long time since I've heard such a warm and sweet female voice as Bien Thi Kim Thuy's. She portrayed the character of Sister Su with a full range of emotions – tragedy, heroism, resilience, anger – giving her ample opportunity to showcase her abilities. Notably, Kim Thuy didn't overact when embodying the heroic character; her shouts and screams weren't harsh, but rather pleasant to listen to. And when acting out sadness or love, her voice perfectly captured the essence of a tragic heroine, without being overly delicate or affected. Furthermore, her beauty endeared her to the audience. It's clear that Kim Thuy has great potential and will go even further.

The second prize winner was Ta Quoc Khanh (from Kien Giang ) with his portrayal of Tuan in the excerpt "The Song of Finding Mother" . With his warm, deep voice, a rare find among the many high-pitched voices today, Ta Quoc Khanh immediately won over the audience.

And the third prize went to visually impaired contestant Le Thi Nhung (from Tay Ninh ) for her performance in the excerpt "Long River" . Le Thi Nhung played the character Luom, a visually impaired person like herself, so her singing and acting were very genuine and natural, earning her the "Most Popular Contestant" award from the audience. These two awards were perhaps quite unexpected for Le Thi Nhung, and also a surprise in this year's Golden Rice Award season.

The Golden Rice Award is a major competition in the art of Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera), having been held 28 times. This year's competition, which started in 2021, was extended to this year due to the pandemic, and it continues to be warmly received by the audience. Although new regulations introduced in recent years require contestants not only to sing but also to perform excerpts, increasing the difficulty level comparable to the Golden Bell Award for Cai Luong, most participants have successfully overcome the challenges and performed very well. Cai Luong still possesses a strong vitality among the people and young people.
