Border guards in Tho Chau

The Tho Chau Border Guard Post (under the Provincial Border Guard Command) is located approximately 220km from the mainland and is tasked with managing and protecting the sovereignty of 2,634 hectares of land and the entire sea area of the Tho Chu archipelago. Over the years, officers and soldiers have proactively coordinated efforts to build a strong all-people border defense posture, making a significant contribution to the management and protection of sovereignty and security along the southwestern sea and islands of the Fatherland.

Tho Chau is considered an important fishing logistics service base in the southwestern sea region. Offshore fishing vessels from both within and outside the province frequently operate in this area in large numbers. Recently, the illegal transportation and storage of gasoline and oil, as well as IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing, have continued to occur.

Therefore, the Tho Chau Border Guard Station proactively manages the operation of vehicles, directing subordinate units to strengthen inspections and controls on people, procedures, and documents related to fisheries exploitation and goods transportation.

Patrol boats and teams prevent vessels that do not meet the requirements from departing (fishing vessels with a length of 15 meters or more). The unit combines on-site patrols and inspections with monitoring of vessels through ship and boat management software, promptly detecting signs of violations.

Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Council of Tho Chau Special Zone, Do Van Dung, assessed: "We acknowledge the efforts of the Tho Chau Border Guard Station in particular, and other forces in general, in performing their duties well for the peace of the sea and islands, and for local order. The officers not only contribute to maintaining security and order but also effectively carry out public relations work, staying close to the area, creating favorable conditions for local people to do business and for boats and ships to enter and leave the island."

Tho Chau Border Guard Station, in coordination with Coast Guard Region 4, is conducting a campaign to raise awareness against IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing.

Currently, within the unit's jurisdiction, there are 27 households raising fish in cages covering more than 5 hectares of sea surface. The unit's command has established 8 solidarity groups for aquaculture, 6 safe fishing groups, and 2 security and order groups in the area. The unit assigns officers to stay close to the people, paying attention to their activities, especially focusing on cage fish farming.

Regular visits and outreach have helped border guards get closer to the people and fishermen; the people feel more secure in their fishing and aquaculture activities. To date, 100% of households engaged in fishing and aquaculture understand the law and strictly comply with regulations from the central and local authorities, especially in combating IUU fishing…

“In the first six months of 2025, the unit conducted patrols, detected, apprehended, and processed one vessel for possessing four vessel tracking devices belonging to other fishing vessels. They also detected and processed one case involving two vessels for failing to maintain communication from their vessel tracking devices.”

"At the same time, in coordination with the An Thoi Port Border Guard Station, we patrolled, detected, arrested, and handled 4 cases involving 16 individuals illegally transporting over 133,000 liters of diesel fuel; and independently apprehended 2 cases, seizing over 50,000 liters of diesel fuel," said Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Tu, Commander of the Tho Chau Border Guard Station.

To ensure security and order in the area, from the beginning of 2025 until now, the unit has organized many public meetings, attracting thousands of participants, including disseminating legal documents, information on sovereignty , fishing grounds, ports and harbors, etc.

They coordinated 20 sea patrols and hundreds of night patrols with police and military forces; regularly reminded owners of guesthouses and restaurants to strictly comply with local regulations and not to operate beyond the permitted hours. In addition, they launched campaigns such as: "Tho Chau Special Zone - Plastic Waste-Free," "Tho Chau Youth Joining Hands to Protect the Sea and Islands," and "Tho Chau Border Guard Post Youth Union Exchanging Plastic Waste for Gifts"...

Today, Thổ Châu's defense and security are firmly maintained, serving as a foundation and driving force for attracting investment. Border guards at the forefront of the border region are also silently working day and night, contributing alongside the entire political system to help Thổ Châu progress further.
