In Chiềng Hặc commune today, the hillsides are covered with green fruit trees such as mangoes and longan. Mr. Hà Văn Hải, Party Secretary and Head of Văng Lùng village, shared: "The fruit tree planting movement has completely changed the lives of the people. The villages of the three merged communes, from Chiềng Hặc to Tú Nang and Mường Lựm, all have longan, mangoes, and other new crops. Many households growing mangoes earn 300-400 million VND per year."
Mr. Cao Xuan Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng Hac commune, informed: Currently, Chieng Hac commune has more than 1,355 hectares of mangoes, mainly Taiwanese GL4 mangoes and green-skinned elephant mangoes. Each year, the mango production reaches approximately 11,300 tons, contributing 42% to the commune's total fruit production and bringing an estimated value of 44 billion VND to the people. The total area granted planting area codes for Chieng Hac mangoes is 222.7 hectares, contributing to enhancing brand reputation and promoting consumption in the domestic and export markets.
Besides mangoes, the main crop, farmers in Chieng Hac commune are cultivating 995 hectares of longan, concentrated mainly in the villages of Coc Lac, Dong Khua, Vang Lung, Ta Lang Thap, Hua Dan, Bo Mon, etc. The estimated yield is over 8,000 tons, with a stable selling price of 8,000 VND/kg. These effective fruit tree cultivation models have helped many households achieve a comfortable life. Mr. Nguyen Van Thuat, from Hua Dan village, Chieng Hac commune, said: "Thanks to participating in training courses organized by the commune in coordination with specialized agencies, I switched to fruit tree cultivation on more than 6 hectares, with longan alone yielding about 40 tons per year. After deducting expenses, I earn over 250 million VND."
To promote the development of fruit trees along the value chain, Chiềng Hặc commune has effectively implemented support policies, creating favorable conditions for the establishment of cooperatives to expand production and business, linking them to the value chain from production to consumption. The commune has also promoted trade activities, creating opportunities for cooperatives to participate in trade fairs inside and outside the province, expanding value chain linkages between cooperatives and businesses regarding fruit consumption; and encouraging cooperatives and businesses to pay attention to purchasing and processing fruit products. To date, the commune has 16 agricultural cooperatives producing fruit trees.
During our visit to the Quyet Thang Huoi Nga Agricultural Cooperative, we observed that its members have boldly invested in and applied scientific and technical advancements to their farming practices. Mr. Lo Van Kim, the cooperative's director, informed us that developing fruit trees through a collaborative model ensures the consumption of agricultural products for farmers, giving them greater peace of mind in their production. Currently, the cooperative has 7 households linked to growing mangoes, longan, and bananas, with over 12 hectares of Taiwanese mangoes and over 8 hectares of longan. Each year, the cooperative sells nearly 500 tons of mangoes, of which over 250 tons are exported to China.
Mr. Cao Xuan Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng Hac commune, added: The People's Committee of the commune is continuing to finalize the planning of cultivation areas according to safety standards, promoting the conversion to new high-yield and high-quality varieties; strengthening propaganda about the benefits of organic production and VietGAP standards, changing the mindset and production methods of farmers. It is also promoting trade, developing OCOP products, granting cultivation area codes, geographical indications, VietGAP certification, organic certification, and safe product certification. At the same time, it is coordinating with cooperatives to expand product consumption linkages.
Attracting and facilitating investment to partner with cooperatives in implementing fruit tree cultivation projects according to VietGAP standards, processing fruit products, improving the quality and value of agricultural products, and meeting market demands.
