The Government Office has just announced the conclusions of the Standing Committee of the Government at a meeting concerning Vietnam's unilateral visa exemption for citizens of other countries and some new policies in the field of managing entry, exit, transit, and residence of foreigners in Vietnam.
A relaxed visa policy will help Vietnam enhance its competitiveness and attract international tourists in the future.
Accordingly, the Standing Committee of the Government requested the Ministry of Public Security to take the lead and coordinate with the Ministry of Justice and relevant agencies to urgently implement procedures and finalize dossiers proposing a number of policies in the field of managing entry, exit, transit, and residence of foreigners in Vietnam in accordance with the law.
The Government reports submitted to the National Assembly for consideration and inclusion in the National Assembly's general resolution at the 5th session (May) concern three issues: increasing the visa validity period from no more than 30 days to no more than 90 days, valid for single or multiple entries; issuing electronic visas to citizens of all countries and territories; and simultaneously increasing the validity period of temporary residence certificates at border gates for those entering under the unilateral visa exemption scheme from 15 days to 45 days.
The government has proposed extending the visa validity period to 90 days.
Currently, Vietnam issues e-visas to citizens of 80 countries with a validity period of no more than 30 days and for single entry only. Previously, the Ministry of Public Security also submitted to the Government and sent to relevant ministries and agencies for comments a draft law amending and supplementing several articles of the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam, which proposes extending the validity period of e-visas issued to foreigners entering Vietnam from 30 days to a maximum of 3 months in order to attract international tourists.
This was also a requirement set forth by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the 2023 National Online Conference on Tourism with the theme "Accelerating Recovery - Speeding Up Development," organized by the Government Office in mid-March.
In 2023, Vietnam aims to welcome 8 million international tourists and 102 million domestic tourists, with total revenue expected to reach 650,000 billion VND.
