Waiting for Nguyen Thi That to unleash her signature sprint to the finish line.
Nguyen Thi That is the Vietnamese cyclist with the best international record to date, having won the Asian Championships three times in 2018, 2022, and 2023. She is also the first Vietnamese cyclist to qualify for the Olympic Games, participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The cyclist from An Giang province has also competed abroad for clubs in Belgium and Switzerland, participating in top European women's cycling tours.
Nguyen Thi That is hunting for gold at the Asian Cycling Championships today in Thailand.
At this year's Asian Cycling Championships in Thailand, Nguyen Thi That remains the biggest hope. Unfortunately, her specialized racing bicycle was destroyed in a fire during the transportation of the cycling team's equipment from Bangkok to the competition venue. Thankfully, she was promptly provided with another bicycle by the Loc Troi An Giang Group Cycling Club, allowing her to compete in her specialty event, the mass start, which took place today.

To focus their efforts on supporting star cyclist Nguyen Thi That, the Vietnamese national cycling team's coaching staff decided to exclude Nguyen Thi Thu Mai and Lam Thi Thuy Duong from the individual time trial. This decision was partly due to the lack of specialized racing bikes after a recent bike fire, making it difficult for them to compete for high results. Also supporting Nguyen Thi That in today's race were Nguyen Thi Thi, Lam Thi Kim Ngan, Nguyen Thi Be Hong, and Thach Thi Ngoc Thao. Thach Thao, Be Hong, and Thuy Duong competed in the U.23 category but raced alongside the national team.
Seven Vietnamese female cyclists will compete in the mass start event taking place today at the Asian Cycling Championships.
With her strong sprinting ability, Nguyen Thi That was strategically positioned to finish in the top group to showcase her skills. Competing against her were riders from South Korea, China, Hong Kong (China), and host country Thailand. Among them, the host country's rider, Jutatip, also possessed strong sprinting abilities and was a rival of Nguyen Thi That in previous competitions, promising to be a direct competitor in this rematch.
The mass start event in which Nguyen Thi That and the Vietnamese women's cycling team competed at the Asian Championships covered a distance of 105.7 km on a relatively flat course. A total of 82 riders from 11 teams competed, and the focus of Vietnamese fans was on the golden girl Nguyen Thi That, with the hope that she would shine and prove her talent on the continental stage.
