Having been attached to Thien Cam Son for many years, I am still attracted by the inherent characteristics of this mountain. Besides the sacred legends and the bustling crowds during the months of pilgrimage, Cam Mountain also has a unique beauty during the rainy season, with the hustle and bustle of gardeners when the fruit season comes, especially the strawberry season.
Luckily, I have some friends in Cam Mountain, so I always have interesting trips when I come here. They are not rich in material things, but their hearts are always open! With "specialized" cars, they take me along all the big and small roads on Cam Mountain. We go up to Thien Tue or straight to Bo Hong, everywhere we see cool green gardens. Those gardens, when it rains, change their clothes, absorb the soil of the mountains and forests and give life a season of intoxicating fruits.
During my visit to Mr. Tran Hoang Anh's strawberry garden (residing in Vo Dau hamlet, An Hao commune), I was extremely impressed with the beauty and productivity of this plant. Having settled on Cam mountain for more than 40 years, this gardener has cultivated many types of plants, but is currently investing in mulberry and durian. He said that mulberry has long been considered a specialty crop of Cam mountain. This gardener does not know the origin of the mulberry tree, only hearing that Cam mountain originally had wild mulberry varieties, which were brought back by local people to grow for fun. Gradually, people brought grafted mulberry varieties from the lowlands to increase quality and productivity, then expanded the area as it is today.
Mulberry trees bear fruit during the rainy season.
The strawberry gardens, through many generations of gardeners, have also changed in area and quality. In terms of species, Cam Mountain gardeners mainly cultivate Cam Mountain green-skinned strawberries, Gia Bao green strawberries, Ha Chau strawberries and bonbon strawberries. Of these, Gia Bao green strawberries and bonbon strawberries are grown the most, due to their delicious quality and high yield.
Standing in the middle of Mr. Tran Hoang Anh's strawberry garden, I was a bit overwhelmed. Amidst the cool green of the mountains and forests, the clusters of ripe strawberries swayed as if inviting the hands of the harvesters. Each mulberry tree in the fruiting season seemed to be struggling to nurture hundreds, thousands of "children". According to this gardener, a mulberry tree about 10 years old can produce 200 - 300kg of fruit each season, bringing in a good income. If the price fluctuates between 6,000 - 7,000 VND/kg, it can bring in more than 100 million VND/year for the gardener.
Standing under the corner of the strawberry tree and looking up, I saw nothing but fruit. Quickly picking a strawberry, peeling it and putting it in my mouth, I felt the characteristic sweet and sour taste of the longan berries. For someone like me who rarely eats sour food, these strawberries were considered to be just right for my taste.
The friend who accompanied him revealed that Gia Bao green strawberries and bon bon strawberries with a moderate sweet and sour taste are always favored by users. Meanwhile, the Ha Chau strawberry variety is currently quite rare, because the yield is not as expected. For gourmets, they want to find Cam mountain green-skin strawberries because of the traditional flavor, which has existed with the lives of residents on the mountain for many years. However, due to market demand, the area of Cam mountain green-skin strawberries has also gradually decreased, replaced by strawberry varieties with higher yields.
If you come to Cam Mountain during the strawberry season, you will be impressed by the busy "specialized" vehicles carrying strawberries down to the warehouse to be weighed. When you get to the warehouse, you will be even more impressed by the towering piles of strawberries. They are sorted, put into bags and then loaded onto vehicles to be taken to all the provinces...
Only through practical experience can we realize that the fruitful strawberry season can also be developed into an agricultural tourism product. Photography enthusiasts have also created many beautiful photos of the strawberry season in Cam Mountain, bringing special visual emotions to viewers. Mr. Tran Hoang Anh also said that he is planning to develop more forms of eco-tourism associated with strawberry gardens and durian gardens. However, he needs time to prepare the necessary conditions to be able to realize this idea.
At this time, my friends on Cam Mountain said that the strawberry season has just begun, and it will take more than a month for the fruit to ripen. At that time, the strawberry gardens on Cam Mountain will return to repay those who have tended them all year round. As for me, I am still eagerly waiting to return to Cam Mountain during the rainy season, to get lost in the swaying strawberry gardens, to feel again the characteristic sweet and sour taste crystallized from the soil of the majestic Thien Cam Mountain.
Strawberry season on Cam Mountain starts in May and ends in late June every year. With its distinctive flavor and rustic yet unique beauty, Cam Mountain strawberry season can become a seasonal tourism product, helping to increase income for gardeners. |
