Traditional markets are "keeping pace" with digital transformation.

In traditional markets throughout the province, cashless payment methods are becoming increasingly popular. With just a simple QR code from the bank at the counter, customers can complete transactions quickly in a few steps. Small traders are also flexibly adopting online sales. This is gradually helping traditional markets adapt to the digital age and modern consumerism.

These "digital stalls"

One morning at Phan Rang market (Phan Rang ward), the usual buying and selling activity took place, but a noticeable change at the stalls was the placement of bank QR code boards in easily visible and convenient locations, allowing customers to quickly transfer money for goods. Cashless payment methods have become familiar to both sellers and buyers.

At Ms. Duong Mang Ngoc's shoe stall, a mica board displaying a bank QR code is placed next to the sandals and sneakers . Ms. Ngoc shared: "Nowadays, many customers only pay by bank transfer. I find it very convenient because I don't have to carry a lot of cash, and it's safer." Ms. Truong Thi Lan, the owner of a pork stall, said: "At first, I didn't like customers paying by bank transfer because I was afraid of the risks. But now many customers request bank transfers, so I registered a bank account and printed QR codes for customers to pay. Currently, there are dozens of bank transfers every day. I'm also used to this payment method and find it very safe, fast, and convenient."

Reportedly, Phan Rang Market currently has 322 traders, most of whom have bank accounts to facilitate cashless payments. Traders are also successfully implementing tax payments via electronic applications, gradually adapting to the requirements of digital transformation in business management. Ms. Vu Thi Hue, Head of the Phan Rang Market Management Board, stated: “Cashless payments are becoming increasingly common at the market. The management board is actively promoting and supporting traders in accessing technological applications, contributing to the transparency of business operations and convenience for both sellers and buyers.”

Vinh Thanh Train Station Market (West Nha Trang Ward) has approximately 250 stalls. Small business owners are very familiar with cashless payments. Ms. Le Tu Nhu, the owner of a general store, shared: “I find bank transfer payments quite convenient, so I print out the bank codes to serve customers. Previously, only 1 or 2 customers paid by bank transfer a day, but now 50 to 60% of customers transact using this method, especially young customers who almost never use cash.”

Promoting digital transformation

Electronic transactions and the application of technology in business at traditional markets bring many practical benefits. First, it helps minimize risks associated with cash, such as loss, counterfeit money, or errors in payment and transactions. More importantly, it helps small traders improve their competitiveness and business efficiency, adapt to the rapid development of the digital economy , especially by increasing revenue transparency and facilitating tax management. Furthermore, this is part of the process of building a digital economy and a digital society.

Mr. Tran Quoc Sanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, stated: “Cashless payments at traditional markets demonstrate a positive transformation, aligning with the development trend of the digital economy. This not only facilitates consumers but also contributes to the transparency of business operations and supports state management. In the coming time, the Department of Industry and Trade will continue to coordinate with relevant units to promote awareness and guide small traders to access digital platforms, gradually forming the habit of cashless payments. This will contribute to promoting comprehensive digital transformation in the commercial sector.”

The proactive approach of small traders, changes in consumer habits, and the support of regulatory agencies are key factors in promoting digital transformation in business operations. The digitalization process in traditional markets is spreading rapidly, contributing to building a modern, transparent, and sustainable economy.

Beyond cashless payments, many small traders in markets are also leveraging social media to expand their sales channels through methods such as livestreaming, selling on Facebook, Zalo, TikTok, or e-commerce platforms. These sales methods help small traders "expand their storefronts," develop customers online, and thereby increase revenue and profits.
