The Hai Phong Buffalo Fighting Festival is one of the cultural heritages characteristic of the coastal region of Hai Phong. It is a long-standing cultural activity with many interesting events.
This is not just an ordinary festival; it's a celebration associated with the worship of the water god and the custom of sacrifice. This festival aims to showcase the martial spirit of the people of the coastal region. Don't miss this unique festival, and join author Hoanghai in exploring it through the photo album "Do Son Buffalo Fighting." This photo collection was submitted by the author to the Happy Vietnam Photo and Video Contest, organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications . To ensure the smooth running of the Hai Phong Buffalo Fighting Festival, the people living on Do Son beach have to prepare for the event for more than 8 months. According to the experience of the locals, the most important thing is to find and carefully raise the buffaloes.
The buffalo selected must be a male, strong, and able to withstand blows well. A good buffalo usually has bronze-colored skin, hooked hair, a black jaw, four swirls on its back, and thick, stiff hair to protect it from the sun. Its horns are black like ebony, curving upwards like two bows. Especially, buffaloes with thicker, flatter backs, broad chests, and long, round necks are considered the best. The chosen buffalo is led into the arena by many people. Before each match, the buffalo is fed well and carefully prepared to be in the best condition. The festival features the participation of many organizations and their buffaloes. Attendees often observe the buffaloes and predict the champion. The buffalo fighting is always the most anticipated part of the festival. Outside the arena, the atmosphere is always lively and bustling with cheers and shouts of encouragement. Inside the arena, the battle between the warrior buffaloes is always tense, dramatic, and captivating. Each buffalo carries its own fighting spirit to win, which makes the festival even more vibrant. The Hai Phong buffalo fighting festival always attracts a great deal of attention and is well-known to many people. Many visitors are impressed by the vibrant and lively atmosphere. The locals prepare for the festival very meticulously and thoughtfully. Each buffalo owner carefully selects a strong buffalo to ensure victory in the festival.

The final part of the festival features the distinctive sounds of drums and trumpets characteristic of the region. As these sounds resonate, the atmosphere reaches a climax. The buffaloes will then unleash their full strength, charging at each other to decide the outcome of the match.

The Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival, also known as the bullfight, is an ancient custom, a traditional festival of the fishermen in the Do Son coastal area of Hai Phong; it takes place on the 9th day of the 8th lunar month every year. The festival was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Vietnam in 2013. This photo collection captures the atmosphere of the festival and the impressive, dramatic moments of the matches.
