A survey by Yuanta Securities Vietnam on the performance of industry groups during the transition period between the new year, from December to February each year (2017 - 2024), shows a clear differentiation between industry groups as they enter the New Year and Lunar New Year holidays.
On a three-month average, the Mining sector was the highest-performing group with an average growth rate of 5.78%. Except for January, when the sector's growth was only 2.56%, December and February saw sector performance exceeding 7%.
Following closely behind are oil and gas-related groups, including oil and gas production and equipment, and oil and gas services, all recording average increases of approximately 5.4%. Overall, oil and gas and mining maintained relatively stable growth throughout the three months.
Within the financial sector, banks and securities firms both recorded positive performance during the period from December to February, but the magnitude and pace of growth differed significantly.
For banks, the average growth rate over the three months reached 4.6%, placing them among the market leaders. Notably, January – the period just before and during the Lunar New Year holiday – recorded a growth rate of up to 6.9%, significantly higher than December (3.1%) and February (3.8%).
This shows that historically, banks typically experience their strongest growth in the first month of the year, significantly contributing to the overall market performance during this period. Meanwhile, securities companies saw an average increase of 3.4% over the three months, with January recording the lowest increase at only 0.67%.
