Within the framework of the VFBC project implemented in Quang Binh , FFI is tasked with implementing and monitoring project activities in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve, including: promoting conservation-friendly production and business for communities dependent on forests; strengthening the management of special-use and protection forests; enhancing the effectiveness of law enforcement against crimes of forest and wildlife destruction; and reducing consumption demand through behavioral change methods.
During the three years of implementing the project in our province, the VFBC project and the FFI organization have helped strengthen the capacity of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve by organizing 49 training courses and workshops on management and knowledge and skills in biodiversity conservation; supporting the development of a sustainable forest management plan and an ecotourism project for Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve (approved by the Provincial People's Committee); supporting the organization of the international workshop commemorating 20 years of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park; and providing smart equipment for forest patrol work.
In addition, the FFI organization supported the installation of 14 informational signage and organized two biodiversity surveys (early and late) with 157 camera trap stations across the entire area of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve. This is the largest-scale camera trap biodiversity survey program ever conducted in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve.
The VFBC project and the FFI organization have strengthened coordination in effectively implementing the law enforcement system against forest and wildlife encroachment in the province, such as: supporting the operation of 5 inter-agency teams in Minh Hoa, Bo Trach, Quang Ninh, Le Thuy districts and Dong Hoi city; signing 29 agreements on wildlife protection and 424 commitments to say no to wildlife products; supporting the operation of 14 forest patrol teams and trap removal in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve; conducting 18,486 patrol days; removing and destroying 6,001 wildlife traps; disseminating and guiding legal regulations, and conducting surprise inspections of businesses related to forest and wildlife products.
Mr. Bach Thanh Hai, Director of the Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve, shared that in 2024 alone, the FFI organization supported and coordinated with the unit to carry out 3 communication campaigns on forest protection and wildlife conservation; applied Smart Mobile tools in forest protection and biodiversity patrols (conducting 1,730 patrol days, covering a distance of 15,250km, and detecting and collecting 333 traps); implemented field surveys and investigations; and is currently developing an ecotourism and resort project for the Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve for submission to competent authorities for appraisal and approval.

VFBC Project Coordinator Trinh Minh Long stated that FFI is a reputable and professional international organization, so the sub-components of the project have been implemented very effectively and practically, in line with the policy of socialization in forest management, protection, and biodiversity conservation, and have received the consensus of local authorities and people in the project area. In the future, through funded projects, the Provincial Forest Protection Department hopes to receive the cooperation of FFI to contribute to improving the quality and biodiversity of forest ecosystems in Quang Binh province.
