Attending the workshop were members of the Party Central Committee: Professor, Academician Chau Van Minh - President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh; Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee Nguyen Van Phong; Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Trong Dong and many delegates who are leaders of agencies, units, experts, businesses, and managers in Hanoi.

Environmental quality does not meet requirements

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh said that Hanoi is a special city with rapid urbanization and a very large population growth rate. At the same time, Hanoi is the center of the Red River Delta, the region with the highest economic growth rate in the country. With this characteristic, Hanoi always faces many environmental problems such as air pollution, overload in solid waste and wastewater treatment, etc.

Therefore, environmental protection in Hanoi is always a key issue, of primary concern to the Central Government and the City's leaders. This is reflected in many important documents of the Central Government and the City and has been implemented in recent times.

According to the Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, the 2024 Capital Law has specifically stated a number of tasks that need to be implemented regarding the identification of low-emission zones. In the Capital Planning, environmental issues are placed as the top priority among the key and urgent tasks that need to be solved by the Capital in the 2025 - 2030 period.

The workshop attracted many delegates including experts, scientists, managers and businesses in the environmental field.
The workshop attracted many delegates including experts, scientists, managers and businesses in the environmental field.

To implement that policy, Hanoi is resolutely carrying out many activities to improve the environment, such as: Air pollution treatment is implementing solutions to reduce private vehicles, increase investment, put into use public passenger transport, convert to green transport, eliminate the burning of honeycomb coal, increase road cleaning, monitor environmental sanitation of construction works...

In addition, Hanoi also focuses on wastewater treatment and cleaning up rivers. Typically, Hanoi is urgently implementing solutions to replenish water from the To Lich River, reviving the river under the direction of General Secretary To Lam (Hanoi is determined to complete the task of replenishing water from the To Lich River by September 2025).

In addition, Hanoi is piloting the modernization of waste collection and the piloting of waste classification at source in 5 inner-city districts, etc. However, according to Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh, the environmental quality in Hanoi has not met the requirements, especially the air quality.

To solve this "problem", Chairman of the City People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh hopes that through the workshop, experts, scientists, organizations and businesses will join hands, accompany and share with experts and scientists to contribute many creative and dedicated ideas, feasible solutions that need to be prioritized to quickly improve the environmental quality of the city, contributing to building a civilized, modern and cultural capital Hanoi. To find effective solutions to help Hanoi improve the quality of the environment sustainably as desired.

Clean up the environment to increase the attractiveness of the capital

Speaking at the workshop, Professor Chau Van Vinh - President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology said that Hanoi, like many large cities in the world, in the process of development, has to face many serious environmental problems such as air pollution, water pollution, domestic waste, solid waste, etc.

"The above problems not only affect the quality of life and public health but also have the potential to reduce Hanoi's ability to attract investment as well as the sustainable development of the capital," said Professor Chau Van Minh, adding that with the current state of Hanoi's environment, finding effective solutions to solve urgent environmental problems is a top priority.

The Director of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology emphasized that, in the face of environmental challenges, the role of science and technology in environmental management and protection is becoming increasingly important. This can be clearly seen in many developed countries in the world with many solutions that have been applied and brought about effectiveness.

In Vietnam, Professor Chau Van Minh said that in recent times, the Government has also had many important policies to promote sustainable urban development. The most recent are Decisions 1569 and 1668 on the general planning of Hanoi Capital. These decisions emphasize the important role of science and technology in innovation and environmental protection.

“The workshop is a forum for us to look at the current state of environmental pollution in Hanoi and propose effective solutions to solve urgent problems, towards a green - clean - beautiful Hanoi” - Professor Chau Van Minh affirmed.

Valuable lessons from international friends

Presenting at the workshop, many experts and managers proposed remarkable solutions to protect the environment of Hanoi Capital. Dr. Hoang Duong Tung - Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment presented a paper on "Some urgent solutions to handle environmental pollution in Hanoi: air pollution problem", in which he proposed urgent solutions to reduce air pollution in Hanoi and neighboring provinces such as: digital transformation for green transformation in the period 2025 - 20230; multi-sectoral approach; household waste management; regional linkage.

According to Dr. Hoang Duong Tung, the opportunity to solve air pollution and environmental problems in Hanoi is now ripe and convergent, so with the determination and cooperation of all parties, with urgent and effective solutions, the capital's air pollution problem will gradually be solved.

Coming from Kitakyushu University (Japan), Professor Kiwao KADOKAMI brought a presentation on Experience in Urban Environmental Management and Protection in Kitakyushu City, Japan with many remarkable contents. The presentation outlined the process of environmental pollution occurring in Kitakyushu City, starting with air and water pollution since 1901 due to the development of heavy industry and chemicals.

The workshop recorded many valuable presentations from domestic and foreign experts and scientists.

The process of overcoming environmental pollution in this city was carried out later with a series of initiatives such as overcoming pollution by Kitakyushu method; International cooperation on environment; Waste recycling through Eco-Town project; Sustainable community development. Those initiatives have contributed significantly to solving the pollution situation in Kitakyushu city. Up to now, in 2025, this city is making a breakthrough towards the goal of zero carbon emissions.

A notable highlight in the solution to overcome environmental pollution that Kitakyushu City has implemented is the “Kitakyushu Method”. This is a method of coordination between the government and businesses in overcoming pollution and is the foundation for the integrated path of economic and environmental development.

In addition, pollution control measures implemented by businesses in this city do not stop at treating exhaust gas before it leaves the chimney, but also focus on improving production processes by applying less polluting production technology. This technology not only helps improve the environment but also brings economic benefits by increasing productivity.

Thanks to effective solutions, a miracle has truly happened when the sky and sea in Kitakyushu City have been restored to their pre-pollution state in about 15 years. Professor Kiwao KADOKAMI said that from the story of cleaning up the environment in Kitakyushu City, we can see that cooperation between people, businesses, government and scientists is the key to solving environmental problems.

In addition, pollution control through technological innovation can go hand in hand with economic development. At the same time, it is necessary to disseminate best practices to the world and promote international cooperation to protect the global environment. In particular, to develop sustainability, it is important to pass on the experience, technology and knowledge gained to the next generations.
