Among these teenagers, some were even wearing scarves. Perhaps, while puffing on cigarettes, many thought it was the coolest way to "show off." With these teenagers smoking here, what can the school and their families do, when this is happening "outside their control"?
According to the implementation plan of the "National Strategy on Tobacco Control until 2030" in Binh Duong province: For the period 2023-2025, the goal is to reduce the tobacco use rate among men aged 15 and over to below 39%; and among women aged 15 and over, to maintain a reduction below 1.4%. Reduce the rate of passive exposure to tobacco smoke: below 30% in the workplace; below 75% in restaurants; below 80% in bars and cafes; and below 60% in hotels. For the period 2026-2030, reduce the tobacco use rate among men aged 15 and over to below 36%; and maintain or reduce it below 1% among women aged 15 and over. Maintain and reduce the rate of passive exposure to tobacco smoke: below 25% in the workplace; and below 65% in restaurants. At bars and cafes, prices are below 70%, and at hotels, below 50%.
To achieve this goal, a series of solutions have been proposed, emphasizing the role of relevant authorities, schools, and families, focusing on public awareness campaigns, especially targeting vulnerable groups such as teenagers and students.
In reality, local authorities and relevant agencies have consistently prioritized raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco. However, it is difficult to assess whether the information disseminated reaches the intended target audience and how effective it is.
Some opinions also suggest that some individuals lack the resources or access to information channels, thus hindering the effectiveness of awareness campaigns. Perhaps, in addition to propaganda and persuasion, each person, especially adults, should boldly speak up and remind these young people when they see such inappropriate behavior. This firmness and timely intervention would both protect those around them and serve as a reminder to these young people that "showing" they are not just young smokers is important, but also reflects their efforts in work, study, and self-improvement.
