Claude, Anthropic's AI chatbot, experienced a widespread outage on the evening of June 23rd (Vietnam time). Many users reported being unable to use the service. The error affected multiple models and platforms, including the chat interface, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and API.
Data from Downdetector shows a rapid increase in error reports. In the US, the number of reports at one point exceeded 8,000.
Claude's official status page confirms the system is experiencing a surge in error rates across multiple models, not just one version. Both free and paid account users may be affected.
TechRadar reports that some users are experiencing Claude taking too long to "think" and respond. Others are receiving a message that the model is currently unavailable. Downdetector also notes that the bug affects both the chat interface and Claude Code.
Anthropic initially announced it was investigating the issue. Later, the Claude status page updated that the problem had been identified. The company also stated that a fix was being rolled out.
"The issue has been identified and a fix is being rolled out," Claude's status page stated.
After about an hour, Anthropic updated that the fix had been applied. However, according to real-world usage reports, Claude was still not working normally, while the number of bug reports on Downdetector remained high.
This incident occurred amidst the increasing popularity of Claude Code. Anthropic's service competes directly with other major AI chatbots. Claude Code is also widely used by programmers in software development.
This wasn't the only Claude issue recently. The company's status page noted several issues related to error rates in previous days. Another issue involving Claude Opus 4.8 was also resolved on the morning of June 23rd.
Anthropic has not yet provided further details about the cause.
