From poor village to Polytechnic school
Born in 1937 in Ha Lo commune, Hai Lang district, Quang Tri province - a steadfast land in the middle of the sunny and windy Central region - the late Professor, Dr., and Meritorious Student Nguyen Huu Chi grew up amidst the flames of war, in a Confucian family with a rich tradition. His childhood was associated with nights of studying under the flickering light of oil lamps, days of cycling dozens of kilometers to school, carrying in his heart a strong belief in the value of knowledge. Although bombs and bullets may have cut off many roads, they could not stop the will to study and the aspiration to serve the homeland of the young student.
After many years of studying, he passed the entrance exam to the first class of Hanoi University of Science and Technology - the place that later became his second home, where he spent his whole life as a teacher, researcher and guide.

Pioneer of applied mechanics in Vietnam
After graduating with an excellent degree in Hydraulics, Nguyen Huu Chi was retained at the school as a lecturer in Theoretical Mechanics just two months later. He was then sent by the State to study in the Soviet Union and successfully defended his PhD thesis in Fluid Mechanics in 1968 – one of the first Vietnamese PhDs in this field.
Returning in the midst of war, he did not choose a safe life in the city, but threw himself into teaching, research and building the foundation for the country's applied mechanics industry. Under his guidance, the Faculty of Applied Mechanics and key departments such as Marine Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering gradually took shape, playing a pivotal role in training engineers for strategic industries.

The late Professor was particularly devoted to developing the Marine Engineering industry – a field associated with Vietnam’s dream of mastering the sea. Thanks to his vision and dedicated leadership, this department has not only trained thousands of talented engineers, but also contributed to building a modern shipbuilding industry for the country.
A lifetime of tirelessly sowing seeds of knowledge
Not only a teacher and scientist , he is also an organizer and builder of the country's mechanical science community. As Vice President of the Vietnam Mechanics Association, he founded the Hanoi Mechanics Association in 1985 and held the position of President for 22 years. The Association became a gathering place for lecturers, researchers, and engineers, contributing to promoting the application of mechanics in practice, from environmental pollution treatment to the design of civil and industrial works.

Despite his old age, he is still devoted to generations of students. |
The late Professor also presided over many national-level scientific projects, typically the project “Some solutions to combat dust and smoke pollution from Ninh Binh Power Plant” – a pioneering study on the environment in the context of that time. He was also the author of many specialized books, notably “1000 hydrodynamic problems” – a fundamental document for many generations of engineering students.
Associate Professor Dr. Le Quang, who worked closely with the late Professor for nearly 30 years in the Department of Applied Mechanics, shared: “Professor Chi was not only a torchbearer, but also a keeper of the fire for an entire generation. He was both strict in his profession and tolerant in life. What he left for Vietnamese mechanics is a legacy that cannot be measured in numbers.”
A teacher of love for the profession and exemplary personality
Although strict on the podium, in real life, he is a gentle, devoted teacher, always willing to listen, share and guide his students like family members. To his colleagues, he is a shining example of professional ethics, sense of responsibility and rustic simplicity. Associate Professors Le Quang, Khong Doan Dien, Pham Van Sang - who have accompanied him for many decades - all consider him the "soul" of the Faculty of Applied Mechanics.

Mr. Nguyen Tuc – former member of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, who worked for many years in scientific and educational councils – also expressed deep respect: “Professor Nguyen Huu Chi is the type of teacher that society always needs – a person who is both intelligent, popular, and humane. He is a living testament to the model of a true scientist and teacher in the new era.”
Even after retirement, he did not rest. He co-founded the Friendship University of Technology and Management – a place that continues the journey of sowing seeds of knowledge for new generations.
Heritage lasts forever
With his silent but great contributions, the late Professor, Doctor, and Meritorious Student Nguyen Huu Chi was awarded many noble awards: Second-class Anti-American National Salvation Medal, Certificate of Merit from Prime Minister Pham Van Dong, title of Excellent Teacher, and title of Professor in 1992... However, the greatest reward he left behind is probably the thousands of excellent students who continue to write their teacher's journey every day, through their own works, creativity, and professional responsibility.
Professor Chi has returned to his homeland, but the river of knowledge he nurtured continues to flow. In that place – where there is no more chalk dust and blackboards – he must still be smiling, because the seeds he sowed years ago are sprouting, growing and reaching far and wide, in the heart of the country.
