Chess was one of the teams that contributed significantly, bringing home two gold medals for the Vietnamese Paralympic Team at the 3rd Asian Para Games in 2018 in Indonesia. However, this year, Vietnamese chess players are facing difficulties in defending their achievements, especially as the players from host country China, India, and Indonesia are all very strong.
Despite their best efforts in the standard chess events and consistently ranking among the top players, Vietnamese chess players failed to win any gold medals after seven rounds across all events. Instead, they secured five silver medals thanks to Pham Thi Huong (women's disability category B1), Le Van Viet (men's B1), the women's team B1, the men's team B1, and the women's team PI. Meanwhile, two bronze medals were won by Doan Thu Huyen (women's BI) and the women's team B2.
With 5 silver and 2 bronze medals in chess, along with 1 silver and 2 bronze medals in weightlifting and 1 bronze medal in swimming previously, the Vietnamese Paralympic Team currently has 6 silver and 5 bronze medals, ranking 22nd in the overall standings.
