Coach Tuchel's headache

Striker Ivan Toney puts more pressure on coach Thomas Tuchel after winning the AFC Champions League with Al-Ahli.

Toney maintained steady form in Saudi Arabia.

Toney featured in Al-Ahli's 2-0 win over Kawasaki Frontale on May 4, helping the Saudi Arabian side win Asia's most prestigious tournament for the first time, after missing out on the title twice in 1986 and 2012.

Notably, coach Tuchel removed Toney from the England squad as soon as he took over two months ago. Instead, the former Chelsea coach called up Dominic Solanke of Tottenham.

The former Brentford striker moved to Al-Ahli last summer for £40m and has been in impressive form, scoring 26 goals in 39 games. He featured in three Euro 2024 games under Gareth Southgate, but has since fallen out of favour.

In March, the Three Lions scored five goals in two matches, taking all six points and not conceding a goal in their opening two matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Europe. England will return to action against Andorra on June 7.

Back in the AFC Champions League final in Jeddah, Roberto Firmino was the star of the show, setting up both goals. He set up Galeno in the 35th minute, then delivered a precise cross for Franck Kessie to double the lead.

In addition to Firmino (Liverpool), Al-Ahli also owns a squad of former Premier League stars such as Riyad Mahrez (Man City) and Edouard Mendy (Chelsea).
