Toney maintained consistent form in Saudi Arabia. |
Toney featured in Al-Ahli's 2-0 victory over Kawasaki Frontale on May 4th, helping the Saudi Arabian team win Asia's most prestigious tournament for the first time, after missing out on the title twice before in 1986 and 2012.
Notably, coach Tuchel dropped Toney from the England squad just two months after taking over. Instead, the former Chelsea manager called up Tottenham's Dominic Solanke.
The former Brentford striker moved to Al-Ahli last summer for £40 million and is enjoying impressive form with 26 goals in 39 games. He featured in three matches at Euro 2024 under Gareth Southgate, but has gradually faded into obscurity since then.
In March, the "Three Lions" scored five goals in two matches, securing six points and conceding none in their opening two World Cup 2026 European qualifying games. England will reconvene for a match against Andorra on June 7th.
Returning to the AFC Champions League final in Jeddah, Roberto Firmino was the star, assisting both goals. He set up Galeno in the 35th minute, then delivered a precise cross for Franck Kessie to double the lead.
Besides Firmino (Liverpool), Al-Ahli also boasts a host of former Premier League stars such as Riyad Mahrez (Man City) and Edouard Mendy (Chelsea).
