How to calculate admission score
Candidates for grade 10 in Ho Chi Minh City take 3 exams: Math, Literature, English. Candidates for specialized schools take an additional exam in Specialized subjects. Candidates for the integrated English program take an exam in integrated English.
Admission score for non-specialized public high school grade 10 is the total score of the following subjects:
Admission score = Literature score + English score + Math score + Priority points, incentive points (if any).
Admission score to grade 10 specialized schools is the total score of regular exams + specialized subject score x 2:
Admission score = Math exam score + Literature exam score + Foreign language exam score + Specialized subject exam score x 2 + Priority points, incentive points (if any).
According to the regulations of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the test scores of all subjects are calculated on a 10-point scale. Successful candidates must take all 3 tests and not have any test with a score of 0.
The integrated admission score for grade 10 is the total score of three compulsory subjects (Math, Literature, English) plus the integrated score (on a 10-point scale).
Group 1: Students who have studied the integrated English program at secondary school level are considered according to: Admission score = Math + Literature + English + average score of the integrated English program. These students are given priority to enter schools that teach the integrated program.
Group 2: Students who do not study the integrated program but register for admission must take an additional integrated English exam: Admission score = Math + Literature + English + integrated English exam score. Candidates must take all exams, not violate regulations and have no exam with a score of 0.
Grade 10 exam scores in 2025 are predicted to be high
In 2025, 76,435 students in Ho Chi Minh City registered for the 10th grade exam. The quota for public schools in Ho Chi Minh City this year is 70,070. Thus, just over 6,000 candidates were eliminated. The 10th grade exam scores this year are predicted to be high.
The 2025 Literature exam for grade 10 in Ho Chi Minh City has the theme: “On the journey to maturity - a journey that does not only start from the days, but also starts from love. Maturity is not only growing up but also knowing how to clearly recognize the values in life”.
Mr. Bao Khoi, a Literature lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, commented that the exam differentiated well and fully performed the function of "touching people's hearts", in accordance with the purpose and requirements of the exam.
Teacher Bao Khoi predicts that the Literature exam scores will be concentrated in the range of 6.75-7.5. Like every year, scores above 8 will be few and scores above 9 are quite rare.
The 10th grade math exam in Ho Chi Minh City has 7 questions, with new knowledge appearing in statistics and probability. Dr. Pham Hong Danh, Head of the Basic Mathematics Department (Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics ) commented that compared to last year, this year's math exam is easier, the question data is more concise and easier to understand. Of the 7 questions, some are relatively difficult at the end of the exam, but if students have a firm grasp of the knowledge and learn math creatively, they can completely complete it.
Agreeing with the view, Mr. Lam Vu Cong Chinh, a teacher at Nguyen Du High School, said that the math exam for grade 10 in Ho Chi Minh City is suitable for students' ability and the questions are concise. He expected the average score to be 5.5-6, so the possibility of half of the candidates scoring below 5 points like in recent years will not happen.
According to Mr. Phung Xuan Cuong, an English teacher at Vinh Vien High School, the English subject is considered to be relatively more difficult than last year. In particular, the multiple choice section with many questions in the form of conversations requires candidates to understand the context correctly in order to choose the correct answer.
A new point is the sentence completion type based on dictionary entries, replacing the old phrase arrangement type. This type requires candidates to use language flexibly and reason well. The expected score range is around 7-8.
Ms. Huynh Thi Thanh Cat, Vinh Vien High School, also said that this year's English exam for 10th grade admission is relatively more difficult than last year. Although HCMC students have an advantage in foreign languages, with this exam, most will get a score of 7, with a few getting a score of 8 or higher.
