The book's title is taken from two lines of poetry written by the General immediately after peace was restored, embodying the character of a general who dedicated his life to the country, while also encompassing the 30-year journey of arduous, tenacious, and magnificent resistance of the entire nation.
Born into a poor peasant family in Tinh Long, Son Tinh district, Quang Ngai province, General Tran Van Tra (1919 - 1996) embarked on the revolutionary path early in life and dedicated his entire life to the cause of national liberation. From his first battle against the French army at Cau Bong on September 23, 1945, to the decisive moment of the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, his footprints were deeply imprinted on the most important battlefields of Southern Vietnam.

Throughout that journey, he held many important positions: Commander of Zone 8, Deputy Commander of Southern Vietnam, Commander and Political Commissar of Saigon - Gia Dinh, Commander of the Eastern Inter-Zone, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, Commander of the Southern Liberation Army, Head of the military delegation in the Four-Party Joint Military Commission, Deputy Commander of the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, Commander and Political Commissar of Military Region 7, Deputy Minister of National Defense … Each position was a significant responsibility, and at the same time a testament to the trust the Party, the army, and the people placed in him.
In 1982, he retired but continued to contribute. As Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Association and Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Veterans Association, he devoted himself to caring for his comrades and fellow soldiers. In particular, he dedicated his time and passion to researching and summarizing the realities of war, leaving behind a valuable body of work. Among these, the work "30 Years of the B2 Iron Fortress" was planned to be five volumes, but he only managed to complete volumes 1 and 5; volumes 2, 3, and 4 remained unfinished when he passed away.
This book is not just a memoir, not just the personal story of General Tran Van Tra, but also a vivid historical portrait of the two wars of resistance against French colonialism and American imperialism – told in the sharp voice of a seasoned commander, interspersed with the sincere emotions of a young man from Quang Nam who left his homeland to fight and returned home on the day the country achieved peace.
