The 'boost' to digital transformation

QTO - Situated beside the O Lau River, life in Hung Nhon village, Nam Hai Lang commune, flows peacefully like the summer water. In this tranquil setting, the village's digital transformation is distinctly different, vibrant and powerful. This dynamic is believed to have begun when QR codes were introduced to every street and every house in the village.

From Bac Gianh ward, officials and residents of Minh Phuong residential group traveled nearly 200 km to Hung Nhon village to learn from their experience in building the "QR numbering system - creating a digital community" model. Ms. Tran Thi Hung (born in 1961), Secretary of the Minh Phuong residential group Party branch, said: "While browsing social media, I accidentally came across the 'Smart New Rural Area' model in Hung Nhon village. Seeing that this was a good model, similar to my own ideas, I and others traveled a long distance to learn from it."

Thanks to the QR code that Hung Nhon village head Nguyen Nhu Khoa sent the day before, Ms. Hung and the members of her delegation were able to easily reach the meeting place. Village head Khoa shared: "Previously, every time visitors from afar tried to find their way to the village, they had a hard time asking for directions. Some had to go around in circles several times before reaching their destination. That situation has now changed."

Then, Khoa pointed to the stainless steel signs next to the alley number signs, each displaying two clearly printed QR codes. Quickly turning on his phone, he scanned the codes for everyone to see. On the screen, a detailed map immediately appeared with information about the length of each alley, the total number of households, the exact location of each house, public facilities… even the coordinates of the ancestral church, the ancient shrine, or the village cemetery.

To date, the "digitalization of Hung Nhon village" system has been operating smoothly for nearly two years. Thanks to this system, on one occasion, a group of veterans from Nghe An province was able to easily reach the village and find the graves of their comrades. Not to mention the many visitors from afar, delivery drivers, etc., who no longer get lost thanks to the QR code directions. This positive development has even inspired elderly farmers, who have spent their lives working in the fields, to further embrace digital transformation. Technology has become an integral part of life in this rural area.

Using the people's strength to bring "numbers" back to the village.

No one else but the person who pressed the button to start the "digital revolution" in Hung Nhon village was the village head, Nguyen Nhu Khoa. The story began one sleepless night after he and his comrades held a reunion to celebrate their 20th anniversary of enlistment. At that time, his comrades from all over the province and city came to the ancient village by the O Lau River. Unfortunately, Google Maps only identified the main roads, while the intricate network of alleys and lanes remained impassable. Seeing his comrades lost and struggling in the midday sun, and remembering the times relatives and villagers from all over the country called to request location information for their nighttime journeys, Khoa wondered: "Why can the city implement smart house numbering and location tracking, but my village can't?"

With the dedication and keen insight of someone who had served as a Youth Union leader for many years, Khoa quickly got to work. Lacking the funds to hire technology experts, he used his phone to measure every meter of road, hand-draw diagrams of every alley, and compile statistics on every resident… Then, the young village head found someone to teach him how to convert the data into QR codes and integrate satellite positioning.

However, the biggest challenge wasn't the technology, but the people's support. When Khoa first shared his idea, some people objected, saying it was unnecessary. Knowing he couldn't solve it with complex theory, Khoa went to each house, instructing the elderly on how to scan the QR code to see their children's and grandchildren's addresses on their phones. After experiencing it firsthand, everyone was surprised, delighted, and wholeheartedly supported the initiative. Some even volunteered to help the village head campaign for their hometown to be digitized. As a result, all 16 alleyways were digitized simultaneously within just one month.

Discussing the model, Mr. Nguyen Duong Thanh Binh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Hai Lang commune, said that what is noteworthy about the model in Hung Nhon village is that the people did not wait for technology to be "poured" in, but instead rolled up their sleeves and took action, transforming technology into tools to serve their lives. "The 'Smart New Rural Area' model can be considered a special link between the purely agricultural past and the digital future of Hung Nhon village. The model proves that digital transformation is not something grandiose, only happening in lecture halls or technology corporations. Sometimes, it's just a simple story, starting with dedication and a shared commitment to embracing the future. In the future, we will expand this model," Mr. Binh affirmed.
