This scam, which has been warned about in many countries, has recently received special attention from the National Payment Systems Corporation of India (NPCI) because fraudsters exploit users' gullibility to steal OTP codes and misappropriate assets through online transactions.

Accordingly, the scammer will directly call the victim, impersonating a friend and claiming to have obtained the phone number through a mutual friend. The name of this mutual friend is often found in the victim's social media friend list. Next, they will ask the victim to "merge the call" with this friend, which is actually a fraudulent call from the bank requesting the OTP code. When the victim agrees to participate in the merged call, the scammer easily obtains the OTP code and carries out unauthorized transactions on the victim's bank account.

In light of this situation, the Cybersecurity Department advises users to be more vigilant. When receiving calls from unknown numbers, be cautious and verify the caller's identity through friends or relatives. Absolutely do not follow any instructions from suspicious calls, especially do not provide personal information or transfer money to unknown individuals.

To proactively prevent this, users should utilize scam call detection apps such as nTrust, Truecaller, or Calls Blacklist to quickly identify and stop these sophisticated scams. Always be vigilant and protect your personal information to avoid becoming a victim of increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes.
