Prior to their premiere on February 17th (the first day of Lunar New Year), four films – "Tho Oi" (Tran Thanh), "Nha Ba Toi Mot Phong" (Truong Giang), "Mui Pho" (Minh Beta), and "Bau Vat Troi Cho" (Le Thanh Son) – attracted attention from audiences regarding their advance ticket sales.

The film "Mùi Phở" (The Scent of Pho), starring artist Xuân Hinh, is a movie with a full range of flavors perfect for the whole family during Tet (Lunar New Year). |
According to Box Office Vietnam statistics, as of the morning of February 12th (the 25th day of the Lunar New Year), "Tho Oi" (Oh, Little Rabbit) was leading with 1.1 billion VND. Previously, the film experienced a slow display issue on the statistics system, but after the data was fully updated, it rose to the top position.
Following closely behind is "The Scent of Pho," with 535 million VND. "My Father's House, One Room" is close with 515 million VND, while "Heaven-Given Treasure" recorded over 121 million VND. The initial revenue gap shows some divergence, but experts believe the situation could change as the market enters its peak phase closer to the release date.
Among the directors, Tran Thanh has been a familiar face in the Lunar New Year film season since 2021. This year, the artist is undertaking a project in the psychological drama genre, which is his forte.
Truong Giang and Minh Beta are making their directorial debut in the Lunar New Year film season, both choosing family-themed films.
The film "The Scent of Pho," directed by Minh Beta, tells the story of the multi-generational family of Mr. Mui (played by artist Xuan Hinh). Conflict arises when he wants to pass on his pho-making skills but faces opposition from his children. From here, Mr. Mui resorts to many tricks and schemes, but this only pushes him further away from his children. The audience experiences a full range of emotions – like a bowl of pho with all its "flavors": the sweetness of smiles, the saltiness of tears, and the aroma of understanding and sharing.
The film had early screenings for the press and media in early February in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi , receiving some feedback that the film felt noisy and the emotional scenes lacked depth. Director Minh Beta stated that "The Scent of Pho" was intended as a family film, so the team considered incorporating many elements to appeal to a diverse audience. They aimed to strike a balance between pacing, emotion, and the tastes of young audiences – who are accustomed to short content on digital platforms.
"Heaven's Gift" - the remaining Lunar New Year film - marks the reunion of Phuong Anh Dao and Tuan Tran on screen, after "Mai" (2024). Directed by Le Thanh Son, the project tells the story of Ngoc, a single mother with a complicated past. She has a son through artificial insemination using donated sperm. During a trip to the coast, Ngoc coincidentally meets Hong, a fisherman who works as a diving instructor, and discovers he is the father of her child. This encounter plunges them into a series of awkward situations, as Hong faces pressure to get married and have children to inherit his family business.
At the early screening on February 10th in Hanoi, director Le Thanh Son said he worked with the marketing department to gauge audience preferences and interests when developing the script. One of the standout storylines is the character of the con artist – a topical character type that easily resonates with real life. The film doesn't follow the familiar motif of family themes, but instead portrays family members who are not related by blood, living together and facing conflict. He hopes that viewers will clearly feel the message about kinship and sharing when watching the film.
