Container shipping rates are starting to rise.

Geopolitical instability and rising fuel costs are impacting the global shipping market, leading to adjustments in container freight rates in Vietnam, with some domestic routes recording significant increases.

For example, for a 40-foot container loaded with goods, the shipping cost for the Hai Phong - Ho Chi Minh City route is approximately 9 million VND/container, while the Hai Phong - Cai Mep route costs 10.5 million VND. These prices have increased by about 1-1.5 million VND compared to the beginning of March.

In addition to adjusting freight rates, shipping companies also implemented a fuel surcharge starting March 15th. According to shipping companies, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have led to a sharp increase in fuel costs, which is expected to continue for some time. For international shipping routes, most freight rates from Vietnam have not been significantly adjusted. However, some shipping companies whose routes require a detour around the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) have announced the application of a conflict surcharge.

Data from Drewry – a global shipping market analysis firm – shows that the World Container Index (WCI) rose 8% in the most recent week, to $2,123 per 40-foot container. The increase was mainly driven by the Asia-Europe and trans-Pacific routes.

Several major carriers, such as MSC and CMA CGM, have also announced increases in FAK (Freight All Kinds) freight rates effective March 22nd. According to Drewry's forecast, as shipping lines continue to adjust their shipping capacity, spot freight rates in the international market may continue to rise in the coming weeks.

Beyond geopolitical factors, fuel costs are also putting additional pressure on shipping companies. Data from Thurlestone Shipping shows that the price of low-sulfur fuel oil at one point rose from $521/tonne to $822/tonne, while the price of low-sulfur marine diesel reached $1,383/tonne.
