This is the latest violence to shock the Metro transit system, which is working to increase security and improve passenger safety.
US police said that in the early morning of September 25 (local time), a bus robbery occurred, leading to a police chase in Los Angeles. The robbery left one person dead and the police arrested the perpetrator. Police confirmed that a passenger was shot at the beginning of the robbery. This person was taken to the hospital but did not survive.
According to ABC News, Lamont Campbell, 51, hijacked a southbound Route 81 bus carrying the driver and two passengers. During the chase, police deployed spike strips, which punctured the bus's right tire. The bus eventually stopped at 6th and Alameda streets in downtown Los Angeles. Once the bus stopped, police disabled the vehicle to prevent it from moving, and SWAT used "distraction" techniques to board the bus and arrest the suspect. The driver climbed out of the bus through the driver's side window.
The incident is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have shaken the Metro transit system, which has been working to beef up security and improve passenger safety. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who is also the chairwoman of the Los Angeles Metro Bus Board of Directors, issued a statement Wednesday morning calling the robbery “a nightmare.”
At an afternoon press conference, Ms. Hahn praised the bus driver, calling his actions “heroic.” She noted that the bus was fortunate to be equipped with a barrier that separated and protected the driver from the suspect. Metro had previously ordered hundreds of such barriers to enhance driver protection after a series of attacks. The transit agency plans to have the barriers installed on all of its buses by the end of the year.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, a Metro board member, also condemned the violence and supported the implementation of weapon detection systems and increased law enforcement in the subway system.
