Former board members Helen Toner and Tasha McCauley stated that they had lost confidence in Altman after discovering numerous instances of his lack of transparency and dishonesty in communication. Notably, Altman concealed from the board the ownership of the OpenAI Startup fund and provided misleading information about the company's safety procedures.

After being fired, Altman quickly joined Microsoft to lead a new AI team, but just two days later, he returned to OpenAI under a new board of directors. This caused considerable controversy and led investors to threaten to sue the company.

Toner stated that Altman had a troubled past, having been fired from Y Combinator and his startup Loopt, where management reportedly asked the board to fire Sam twice for deceptive and disruptive behavior.

Some OpenAI employees voiced their support for Altman's return, fearing for the future of OpenAI without him, but others expressed concerns about the toxic work environment he created, and some even feared retaliation.

This month, OpenAI's senior safety researcher Jan Leike resigned, stating that "safety culture and processes have been put aside for flashy products."
